At our last meeting our Sergeant at Arms was Paul Cornelius who stepped it down a notch by introducing useless trivia.

Our Rotarian of the day was Bruce Mason, who introduced Larry O'Connor, director of the Caring Hands Food Pantry in Altoona, talked about the extensive need for the food pantry's services in the Southeast Polk and Bondurant areas. He distributed a chart that showed 3,200 families were served in 2015 (6,201 adults and 3,796 children); 3,145 food vouchers given out; $9,842 in utility assistance; $10, 296 in rent assistance; and 93,587 pounds of food distributed. The Clothes Hanger also served nearly 2,000 families.

Larry explained that they get support from Fareway, Hy-Vee, Walmart and Starbucks, among others in Altoona, and each year they get a truckload of donations from the Townsend Foundation. They also receive items from the Food Bank of Iowa. The pantry also purchases food from the local grocery stores.

The food pantry and the Clothes Hanger are open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-6 p.m., and on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays from 9-11 a.m. They will take deliveries of items after 2 p.m. on Mondays, from 9-11 a.m. on Tuesdays, and from 9 a.m.-noon on Fridays.

Larry thanked East Polk Rotary for its continued support of the food pantry program.

This Wednesday our Sergeant at Arms is Tom Downs and our Rotarian of the Day is Marti Kline.

Look forward to seeing everyone Wednesday!

Yours in Service,

Paul Cornelius
