About the speaker

His love of science grew due to a membership to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which he visited often and from which he learned a great deal of information. As a child, he joined the Cub Scouts which sprouted his love of the environment and the outdoors, participating in many conservation projects such as cleaning out a local reservoir that used to house wildlife which had since disappeared. He enjoyed projects that helped restore nature to its natural beauty.

When he moved to the Sierra Nevadas, he joined his school’s Natural Resources Program, which has its own campus devoted to making the program and community a better place. Tyler and his team mates from the Natural Resources Program have gone to the Forestry Challenge completion for the last three years and won three years in a row. Tyler was able to join this competition 2 of 3 times.

Since starting high school, he has participated in of a variety of clubs and extracurricular activities, even taking on leadership roles. During his freshman year, he became the Natural Resources Program’s Community Service Organizer and now holds the position of Vice President.

Since his freshman year, he has been an active member of the school’s chapter of Friday Night Live, an organization that aims to bring youth together and engage them in fun activities so that they don’t turn to drugs and alcohol.

Starting in his freshman year, he has been a key part of the school’s Academic Decathlon Team, and last year during the district’s competition, he won a gold medal in the science category and a bronze medal in the history category.

Most recently Tyler co-founded the Beekeeping Club at this school to promote learning about how to care for bees and what we can do to help them in the area, and he has been elected as the club’s Vice President.
