The concept of doing more “hands on” projects popped up a few times last week in different conversations at our weekly meeting. Given that we just wrapped up selling 50/50 tickets and are in the midst of selling flags for Flags For Heroes, it can seem like all we do is fundraise. And fundraising is indeed important as the money collected is vital to the charities we support.
But I tend to agree with those that say we need to do more “hands on projects”. It’s not that we don’t do any. Habitat For Humanity is about as “hands on” as projects get and is coming up on June 18th (if you’re interested make sure to contact project chair Sharon Prosinski). We will also be doing our third annual Bikes For the World collection sometime in Fall. Although we had to do it differently due to COVID, we still pulled off making sandwiches for SHIP (thank you Maria Kauzmann for the heavy lifting on that one).
Lisa Youngberg is in the organizing stage of a project to help beautify the grounds of the Montgomery Senior Center. Details will be forthcoming shortly.
Paul Blodgett proposed to the Board that the club focus on pulling together different community groups to do acts of service to commemorate 9/11. The Board liked the idea so be on the lookout for this committee which will be organizing soon.
So, we are doing hands on service projects but I think we can do more. But we need YOU to come up with viable projects. If you have an idea (even if it’s not fully flushed out), bounce it off me or President-Elect Andy. Put your thinking caps on because before we can be “people of action”, we need ideas.
