Emma Harries and Elise Guzman presented from Oak Creek Watershed Council.

Protecting Sedona stormwater runoff is essential in order to keep Oak Creek clean. Maintaining and preserving the integrity of Oak Creek is a part of their mission. They hold volunteer clean up events, hold scientific monitoring sessions, public outreach, education events, and maintain watershed areas.

Unprecedented amount of visitors on our public lands this year due to Covid. This makes creek clean up days more important than ever.

The Multiple Separate Stormwater Sewer System (MS4) is found in Sedona. Untreated stormwater carries detergents, oils, minerals, and most concerning- fecal matter. The flow of fecal matter lowers the water quality. Poor hygiene practices, poor management, and lack of funding are having an impact on our water. When our water is not meeting standards, it poses a public health risk.

We can all help and do things to make changes and improvements:
  • Throw trash in the garbage can
  • Pick up after pets
  • Use chemicals: pesticides and weed killers sparingly
  • Participate with organizations and clean up days
  • Share the news with others
  • Leave No Trace
  • Carry a trash bag when you hike and recreate
  • Stay on trails
