Frederick H. Tuttle began his education career in 1959, when, as a recent graduate of Middlebury College, he taught language arts at Lyman C. Hunt Junior High School. After four years as a teacher, he became the school’s assistant principal and later served the same role at Burlington High School. In 1970, Mr. Tuttle became the Assistant Superintendent for the South Burlington School District. He was appointed Superintendent one year later, a position he held for more than 20 years, during which he achieved many honors and recognition for his leadership and vision both within the community and the state of Vermont.

Fred Tuttle was a quiet scholar of English literature and a respected and exemplary educational administrator. In a job that involves finance, policy, bureaucracy and effective communication, Mr. Tuttle cared most about people. He treated everyone with whom he interacted with respect, interest, and attention. Tuttle helped recruit high-quality, experienced teachers and principals who shared his respect for children. Under his leadership, the South Burlington School District gained national and state recognition for educational quality. Mr. Tuttle remained committed to teaching and exemplified excellent leadership. He was a gentleman person and an extraordinary individual who rarely gave orders and frequently offered his assistance to others.

Mr. Tuttle devoted large amounts of his time to his professional associations and was an active member in the Vermont Superintendents Association, where he served as a Trustee and Secretary. He was also active in the Champlain Valley Superintendents Association, the American Association of School Administrators, and Phi Delta Kappa. Mr. Tuttle served on the Board of Trustees of the Medical Center of Vermont. Throughout Tuttle’s 33 years as an educator, he was known as a person who embodied the best of what public education provides to children and to the community. Frederick H. Tuttle earned the respect and admiration of all who knew him.

Mr. Tuttle died after a courageous battle with cancer on June 7, 1992. Prior to his death, the South Burlington Rotary Club presented Mr.Tuttle with a Paul Harris Fellow Award to recognize his many contributions to the community. Subsequent to his death, in 1994, the South Burlington Rotary established an award in Mr. Tuttle’s honor to be presented annually to an individual who either lived or worked in South Burlington. The successful recipient is selected for demonstrating the personal characteristics and commitment to vocation and community for which Mr. Tuttle was known and respected.

The award recipient has his/her name inscribed upon a plaque in City Hall commemorating all the recipients of the award. In addition, a $250 contribution is made by Rotary to a charity of the recipient’s choice.

The Pat Nowak South Burlington Firefighters Banquet and Appreciation Dinner was scheduled for March 21, 2020 but the world stopped turning and this event, like every other, we cancelled and postponed. Well, we couldn't reschedule it this fall so instead we are scheduling it sometime in 2021 but Firefighters need to know now how appreciated they are for standing at the ready 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year for any emergency at any time of day in any weather. So, SB Rotarians are delivering five star banquet meals from the Delta Hotels by Mariot Burlington to Station 1 for 3 nights ( for all 3 shifts). Thank you for all you do!

The Club took the opportunity to meet in person for a socially distanced meeting instead of our usual Zoom meeting before the weather turns too cold. It was great seeing everyone!
We were able to help donate just under 200 reusable masks to the community. Masks were given to the South Burlington Food Shelf, South Burlington School District and Sara Holbrook Community Center.

We inducted 4 new members and would like to welcome, Kendra Demick from Peoples United Bank, Frank Gay from the Delta Hotel, Alan Hebert from Double Tree by Hilton and Chris Bancroft from Vermont National Country Club to our club. We look forward to getting to know them and having more help with all that we do for our community.

On December 19, the South Burlington Rotary Club concluded 2019 with three inspiring moments at its regular meeting at the Doubletree by Hilton.

The morning began with the presentation of the Club’s Frederick H. Tuttle Award, an honor named for Fred Tuttle, former South Burlington School Department superintendent who, himself, was an exemplary educator and community-minded individual.  This honor is bestowed each year upon an individual who has made significant contributions in South Burlington and beyond.  Recent recipients include Jake Agna, Patrick Burke, Sally Borden, Nancy Lavarnway, Don Cummings and Leslie Griffiths.  The 2019 recipient is Jan DeSarno, a tireless and inspirational gardener, particularly as coordinator of the Grandma and Grandpa Garden and the Young Gardener Summer Program at the Vermont Garden Park on Dorset Street.  Nominated for this award by Doris VanMullen, Mary Scollins, Charlie Nardozzi, Nancy Bell, Jack Webb, Donald Balcom, Peter Carmolli and Carol McQuillen, Jan was recognized for her outstanding work on the youth gardening program that introduces children to gardening, conservation, protection of wildlife, recognition of plants, tress and shrubs, basic flower arranging and a love and appreciation of nature.  The Tuttle award includes a $250 donation to a charity of Jan’s choice, permanent recognition along with other recipients on a plaque at City Hall and a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of her commitment to local education programs as well as other beautification projects throughout our area.

Following the Award presentation, Club members and guests were treated to a special holiday concert by members of the South Burlington High School Chorus, led by their conductor Aimee Bushey.  The young men and women perform challenging music, often in different languages, with professional grace and style.  The Rotary Club looks forward every year to these performances that make the holiday season more beautiful and meaningful.

And, last but not least, the morning concluded with the presentation of a wide assortment of cheerily wrapped presents provided by Club members to the Howard Center so children there may have a touch of joy this season.

It was an event that, in its entirety, fully embraced the Rotary motto – Service Above Self.

This morning we celebrated!
Five area Rotary clubs came together to present a check for $9000 to the Greater Burlington YMCA to provide scholarships for swimming lessons.  Clubs from South Burlington, Burlington Sunrise, Burlington, Essex, and Colchester-Milton banded together and wrote a grant to recognize the needs of children and families in our area.
Kyle Dodson the CEO of the Greater Burlington Y accepted the generous donation.

Kyle shared with our clubs about the ground breaking of the YMCA’s new 50,000 building.  As Kyle described it, the building will be state of the art, housing a new pool, fitness facility, gym, track, studios and 10,000 square feet of much needed early education classrooms.

He shared how the Y impacts the communities we represent, and told stories of how everyone is welcomed at the Y.

This long standing organization is deeply rooted in our community and brings people together- much like Rotary. It is great when we can help one another better serve our neighbors.
Great event at the Rotary sponsored Pat Nowak Memorial South Burlington Firefighters and EMT Awards Banquet last night! Kyle Nichols, Rotary President Elect did a great job on the Organizing committee and it was great that our current Rotary President hosted the Rotary table. 125 people in attendance showing gratitude for all our first responders do day in and day out.

Our new member Andrew Swift was welcomed on October 4, 2018.  Watch for him to at our next Rotary event.

We added Kathy LaCross to our membership on October 11, 2018. Welcome to the Club!

Dave Johnson stopped by this week to present our club with the trophy they won at the Essex Rotary Golf Tournament. We can't wait to defend it next year. Thanks Dave !
SB Rotary funds are distributed to non-profits and other organizations that benefit our community and youth. Among recent recipients was the Sara Holbrook Community Center where funds were used to help support a variety of summer programs for youth. At our club meeting on August 9th, Bruce Chattman (Vice-President of SHCC and a Rotarian) presented a large thank you note to the membership from the youth at the Center. With Bruce is Penne Thompkins, Chair of the SB Rotary Youth Services Committee.

Our sincere gratitude is extended to everyone who helped to make this an amazing success! We raised over $9,000 and over 160 people attended. Plans are already underway for next year. Make sure to visit our Facebook page for the full album of pictures from the day.

Rotarians were busy all day ringing the Salvation Army bell to raise money for the Salvation Army. Over $500 was raised. Great job everyone!

Rotarians were busy preparing blankets to deliver in the community for the holidays. We are always looking for ways to spread holiday cheer.

South Burlington Rotarians were in Burlington at the Trotting of the Turkeys event. Over 400 turkeys were donated to the food shelf. Great work everyone!

District Governor Eric Denu visited today. He shared stories about his life in Rotary and the District.  The District's theme of Teamwork was stressed throughout his talk. We look forward to working with Eric for the rest of the year!
It is time to nominate a deserving community member for the Fred Tuttle Award.

Each year the South Burlington Rotary Club presents this award in order to recognize individuals who like Fred go beyond the expected, bringing extraordinary zeal and integrity to everything in which they are involved while enhancing the South Burlington community at large. (quote from the plaque)

In simplest terms, the criteria are that the nominee must live or work in South Burlington and have contributed significantly in some way to their vocation. The committee considers such factors as how the nominee's actions have benefited their profession, how long he or she had been involved in their vocation and whether the individual exemplifies the Rotarian ideals.

A quick word as to the history of the naming of the award. Prior to his death, the Club presented Mr. Frederick Tuttle with a Paul Harris Fellow for his contributions to the community. Fred served as Superintendent of the South Burlington Schools from 1971 to 1992. Mr. Tuttle died after a courageous battle with cancer on May 14, 1992. Since then, the Middle School has been renamed the Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School. He also served as principal of the South Burlington Middle School for many years. The club's sentiment is that Mr. Tuttle exemplified the ideals of what this award is intended to recognize. As such the award is named "The Frederick H. Tuttle Memorial Award" in his

memory.

A plaque commemorating the past recipients of the award is placed in City Hall - it includes the names of all prior recipients and will include all future recipients. Also, a

$250 contribution is made by Rotary to the charity of their choice.

Applications can be download on the left side of the Rotary website. Application deadline is November 2, 2017.
