Frequently Asked Questions in NZ about our Spurtles

What is a Spurtle?

These spurtles are based on traditional Scottish Spurtles which were designed in the Scottish Highlands in the 15th Century to be the best shape for stirring lumpy mixtures such as porridge, soups and stews. Brought to New Zealand by the first pioneers and handed down through various generations to day.

Today, Spurtles are the handiest implement in the kitchen and the first to turn to for stirring, mixing and whisking.

They are easy to clean and the perfect size. They are light and strong.

Where does the recycled Kauri Spurtle come from?

Our first batch of Recycled Kauri Spurtles were created by the members of the Kaiapoi Menzshed, They have a lot of timber donated to them and included in their stocks was a little bit of Kauri.

What natural wood is Kauri?

Kauri trees  are native trees that grow in the northern part of New Zealand’s North Island. These evergreen trees often reach between 100 and 160 feet tall, with trunks between 2 and 20 feet in diameter. The branches grow high above the ground, with the tallest trees having limbs that appear 50 feet above the ground.

Kauri tree wood is among the most valuable timber in the world. Since it comes from ancient trees, and extracting timber from the rural New Zealand swampland can be difficult, it is often very expensive.

What is the background to the handy recycled Kauri Spurtles?

A member of the Papanui Rotary Club had a Kauri Spurtle given to him 60 years ago by a craftsperson in Nelson, New Zealand. His family still use this same Spurtle almost every day.
Following on from the success of the Recylcled Rimu wooden footstool fundraiser he thought of the Spurtle. This was subject to finding some recycled Kauri. They found enough to get the project going and are now in the process of searching for more recycled Kauri SPurtles to keep up with demand.

I love this Spurtle. I had never heard of a Spurtle before and now I use this every day. I wash it by hand and every couple of weeks I lightly oil it with olive oil and it comes up like new. I didn't care about it being Kauri until my friends started asking where they could buy one and I found out how hard it is to get something made form the hardest wood in the world.

I make a Ham, Cheese and Tomato Omelette many mornings a week. I cut the ham and mix it in with the eggs. When I pour the mix into a non-stick frypan the pieces of ham used to stick to the mixing bowl. The special shape of the Spurtle solves this problem. The curved edge easily allows me to flick the stragglers into the pan. Being Kauri is perfect to protect my nob-stci frypan. I use the Spurtle to cook the rest of the omellette. Perfect for the edges.
