Hi Rotary members,

It is Tayla Thorby here. I was a recipient of the Papakura Rotary Scholarship back in 2018 from Rosehill College. Just thought I would send you a message to let you know I had another very successful year at university.

I have just completed my exams last Friday and await my final results. Although we only actually spent 6 weeks at uni this year, I still enjoyed the challenge of online learning. I spent a lot of the year volunteering at Karaka School when I did not have classes. This school has given me so many opportunities and is definitely helping me in developing my teaching.

The highlight of my year was definitely my practicum. In the first 4 weeks of Term 4, I was placed at Papakura Normal School in a Year 7/8 class. Although I was quite nervous about this placement because I am used to the younger students, I absolutely LOVED the big kids!!! My class was so so amazing and I got to not only teach them but build many meaningful connections with my students. They may have even convinced me to teach big kids now!

I have one more year at university and this time next year, I will be getting ready to have my very own class! Super crazy, but very exciting!

Thanks again for the Rotary Scholarship, I really do appreciate it.

Kind regards
Tayla Thorby
