Toronto and Region Conservation Authority

Toronto and Region Conservation is enabled under provincial legislation to manage and protect the regions watersheds. TRCA is one of 36 conservation authorities operating across Ontario -- Conservation authorities are unique in that they are locally governed, watershed based and community driven. Our Board is comprised of members appointed by the regions of York, Peel and Durham and the City of Toronto with represents a mix of municipal politicians, citizens and community leaders. TRCA's 2015 combined operating and capital budget was $140 million. Funding for TRCA comes from a mix of self - generated revenues (user fees for conservation areas, education programs, development applications and others), municipal operating and capital funding and private funding and grants through The Living City Foundation. In 2015 TRCA invested over $13 million in education, training and outreach programs, services and facilities that support the development of a sustainable city region. For TRCA these programs are an investment in our future sustainability.  They have been designed to not only develop knowledge, but provide opportunities to translate this learning into action at home, as well as in the school, community and workplace. These programs respond to an evolving curriculum within the formal education system, as well as shifts in industry, immigration and demographic trends. Today, TRCA’s education activities reach over 180,000 learners annually.
