GUEST SPEAKER  :  District Governor Beth Selby

Beth’s intro to Rotary: "People often ask me how I became involved in Rotary. While my official Rotary involvement began in 2004 as a member of the Rotary Club of Belleville, my rotary experience started in 1993 when my husband, Barry (then a member of the Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise) and I were counselors to the first of five students involved in the Rotary Exchange program. This experience is "My Rotary Moment".

One of Beth’s goals this year is to assist Club Presidents with strengthening their clubs. She believes the key to membership retention is engagement. We are great at attracting people to Rotary, but we need to engage them in social activities and service projects to retain them as members. Let's demonstrate the value of membership in Rotary International and grow Rotary!

She talked about Rotary International President Mark Maloney’s theme : “In this ever-divided world …                   ROTARY CONNECTS  THE WORLD.”

Mark’s Goals are to: Grow Rotary; Involve Our Families; Build a Viable Path to Rotary Leadership and to connect Rotary’s History with United Nations.

  • Grow Rotary

    • Make clubs irresistible

    • Focus on member engagement

    • Organize new clubs

    • Examine our demographics

    • Stress the importance of a Club Membership Committee

  • Involve Our Families

    • Welcome children at Rotary events

    • Allow them to grow up in the family of Rotary

    • Involve families in our communities in our projects and activities

  • Build a Viable Path to Rotary Leadership

    • Make leadership roles doable

    • Create leadership strength through proactive, succession planning

  • Rotary’s History with United Nations

    • Rotary celebrates 115 years, the United Nations 75 years

    • What can we do together to build a healthier, more peaceful, sustainable world?

Following the Speech, Assistant Governor John Burns paid tribute to Bob Stephens , who is a 69 year member of the Rotary Club of Bowmanville. The club made Bob an Honourary member and his donations to the Rotary Foundation were well noticed as Past District Governor Michael Bell gave to Bob his major Donor pin and awards. Well deserved. Interesting to note that Bob often came to our Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood , especially in the early years to say hello and maintain his attendance too. Well done Bob. Many standing ovations.

A very special thank you to Peter Hernandez of the Rotary Club of Oshawa who took many photos and they are shared in a post of our Oshawa-Parkwood Rotary Facebook Page.

Thank you District Governor Beth, and Assistant Governor John Burns for making tonight a tremendous success.
