GUEST SPEAKERS : Derrick Clark – Chief – Oshawa Fire Services

 

Derrick Clark was introduced by Dave Andrews.

Derrick grew up in Oshawa and worked his way up through the entire fire department, and did continuing education. He began his career in Oshawa in 1986 working in the dispatch department before being promoted to firefighter. From there, he moved his way up the ranks, obtaining the roles of acting captain, training officer and chief training officer before becoming the city’s deputy fire chief.

Derrick also holds a master’s certificate in municipal leadership from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology

and a certificate in Harvard Business School Executive Education’s Manage Mentor program for management and leadership development. And a certificate in the executive Program of Municipal Leadership for Schulich Executive Education Centre (SEEC) at York University.

 

He was appointed Chief on March 20, 2017 having twice served as interim chief . He reports directly to the Commissioner of Community Services, and is accountable for the administration of the Fire Service and is an active member of the community services leadership team. He is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of a 25 million dollar annual budget.

Under the FPPA (Fire Prevention & Protection Act) the Chief reports to City Council, and is responsible for the delivery of fire protection services. Oshawa is a career department with 161 full-time firefighters; 16 communication operators; 10 fire prevention officers; 3 training officers; 2 mechanics and 8 administration support staff.

 

Chief Derrick Clark gave us a broad review of the Fire Department's Five Year Plan. He deals with 160 full time Fire Officers. Gave us an over view of the Fire department. He has a Budget of 27 million dollars. The response time for Fire in the Community is divided in three categories—1 Dispatch time, 2 Turnout time & 3 Travel time.

They also focus on Fire Prevention & training. Prevention in the sense –Fire alarm system, Smoke detectors, P A system. CO detectors & Sprinkler system etc.

Jennifer French, MPP for Oshawa was pleased to join us for dinner and great community conversations. In her key-note address, she talked about priorities for our community such as housing challenges, poverty and health and wellness resources and supports. She spoke about the summer session of the 42nd session of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario and shared her new critic portfolio responsibilities – infrastructure, transportation and highways.

Jennifer is looking forward to representing Oshawa at Queen’s Park in a new role as a Presiding Officer of the Legislature, serving as Speaker during some debates.“
