HAPPY TOONIES
  • Past District Governor Ted - Tuesday Nov. 27 is "giving day", think about giving to the Foundation
  • Hilda pleased that grandson Ryan passed his Drivers Test - Al took him to Peterborough for this
  • Larry happy that St Vincent's Kitchen received a large donation from Rotary Club of Whitby-Sunrise enabling them with their re-building
  • Ted happy/sad - traveled with Dave to Scarborough for Rotary Leadership sessions and arrived very early; his presentation was a 2pm, very stressful as audio visual did not work;  meanwhile Sharron took herself to hospital, underwent tests etc., diagnosis gallstones, discharged in time to pick him up at the Red Barn after Bingo - NO surgery now - shopping takes president!!??!!
  • Mike McLaren looking forward to challenging Al Finnigan on the golf course next summer; Colleen refused "date night" this week!
  • The Battle of the Bobs - Bob Koski and Robert Kipling , both very staunch supporters of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Saskatchewan Roughriders , respectively, had a little wager on the Playoff game  Loser was to donate $20.00 to the Rotary Foundation.  Thank you Robert Kipling. Bob Koski handed the cheque over to Treasurer Devon, courtesy of Robert Kipling..

ROTARY MOMENT:
Past Pres Hilda presented statistics relating to registered consent for Organ and Tissue Donation in Durham Region thanking Oshawa Parkwood Rotarians for their contribution and encouraging renewed support.  There has been a significant increase in registered consent in Durham Region over the past four years from 28% to 39% in Oshawa.  In Uxbridge 50% of health card holders have registered consent.  There are two websites that you can access to register your consent BeADonor-GiveSomeoneaFuture (Oshawa Parkwood site) and Live Life Then Give Life (Donor Awareness Durham Region site).  Hilda thanked the Rotary Club of Oshawa Parkwood for their ongoing financial support of the awareness group.  Giving the Gift of Life is the ultimate measure of Service Above Self.

GUEST SPEAKER  :
Past Pres Dave introduced our own Past DG Ted Morrison who spoke enthusiastically, as always about the                                  Rotary Foundation despite ongoing audio visual difficulties!?!

Some facts from Ted;
  • Donations from Our Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood members since we began = $343,588.72 (US $)
  • Oshawa Parkwood has 19 Paul Harris Fellows (one or more times), 10 Benefactors/0 Bequest Society members - these two are donations after death as per a will designation, and  3  Major Donors
  • We have 5,078 recognition points which can be used by the club to bestow Paul Harris Fellowships on                       persons we think are deserving of such.
  • November is Foundation Month in the Rotary Year; Rotary is 113 years old, the oldest of all service clubs; our "end        polio program" recognized by the World Health Organization  as "the greatest public health campaign" in the world           Polio Eradication began in 1988 when there were 260 million known cases of polio; today there are 28
  • With help from the Governments of the World and the Bill Gates Foundation we are almost there.
  • There are three types of polio virus - Type 2 - none since 1999; Type 3 - none since 2012; Type 1 - is the problem - in Afghanistan
  • These problems occur due to hard to reach populations, political instability, poor infastucture.  Vaccinators  are targeted and sometimes killed.  The Foundation has a fund set up to support families of those who are killed while attempting to complete this vaccination process.
  • At the International Rotary Conference in Toronto, in June of 2018, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke and recognized Rotarys' contribution to this campaign reinforcing support from the Government of Canada.

Ted had much more to offer and I am sure that he will be happy to answer your questions and/or share his presentation with you.

Past Pres. Dave thanked Ted and adjourned the meeting.
