GUEST SPEAKER:  Nick Ryall -  2020 Rotary Virtual Walk for AIDS  & Community Health.

Dave Andrews introduced Nick Ryall who is this year’s  President of the Rotary Club of Toronto Twilight.

Here is a photo of President Lennis and President Nick on a bus in Chicago , on their Presidents Trip to Rotary International Headquarters. Lennis on the far left and Nick beside him. Very cramped quarters in the back of the bus.

Nick is also the incoming Assistant Governor for 3 Toronto-based Rotary Clubs (Eglinton, Bay-Bloor, and Sunrise). Nick is also the  RADAR (Rotary Action for the Development of AIDS Resources) Chair, which falls under the disease prevention branch, of the Areas of Focus Action Committee for District 7070. Nick has chaired the Toronto-based Rotary Pokerwalk for the last 5 years.

Nick is reaching out to clubs who may have participated in the Rotary Pokerwalk for HIV/AIDS in the past years, whether in Toronto or Belleville, in hopes that WE will once again participate, this time, online.

As it was normally a live walk-a-thon that happened at the end of April, it comes at no surprise that the in-person walk had to be cancelled this year. However, COVID-19 did not make the need go away which is why I am excited that we will be using our existing foundation to create a fun virtual walk in 2020!

The walk is not linked to any club. It is a District event that allows every team to raise funds for a Canadian-based charity of their choice that addresses the specific issue of HIV and AIDS and the broader issue of overall community health. This expansion of focus means that you can use the 2020 Rotary AIDS & Community Health Walk as a ready-made fundraiser to support your community partners.

Of every dollar you raise, 75% goes to the charity of you select. 25% goes to what we refer to as the residual beneficiary. This year, that organization is Feed Ontario. Note: Feed The Need Durham is a member of Feed Ontario. We chose this umbrella organization of food banks in Ontario for its focus on stocking foodbanks across Ontario and its ability to extend all funds received. Every dollar earned provides three meals!

There is no sign-up fee to participate and every dollar raised will be donated.

You can start your fundraising NOW by signing up a team on our website and using the online tools to ask for donations. You can walk whenever and wherever you’d like, following social distancing guidelines of course!

Send us short videos (10-15 seconds) of your walk for presentation at our online celebration on Wednesday, July 29 at 07:00 PM. via YouTube. Make it silly, fun, serious, in costume, inside, outside, whatever works for you!

Please see the video below for an explanation on how the 2020 walk will proceed.

Nick Ryall, Chair, 2020 Rotary AIDS & Community Health Walk

Nick was thanked by Past President David Mankiewicz.

Ted Morrison made a presentation in the United Kingdom yesterday to the Rotary Club of Winchester. It just so happens that a good friend and former member of our Rotary Club is this year’s Club President. Ted told the club members about Oshawa, its history, and about our Rotary club of Oshawa-Parkwood, its member and its many projects. He even had a photo of Mike Billington and his wife Margaret at on of our social events.
