Carolina and Chad, on behalf of the Rotaract Club of Durham College & UOIT , presented to our Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood, $65.00 tonight to our group which is absolutely outstanding, for The Rotary Foundation's End Polio Now campaign. Past District Governor Ted Morrison, our District of the Rotary Foundation Committee for our Rotary Club, accepted the donation and said, that hwen this money MCs matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and with the Government of Canada , the $65 will become $325 as you know five times the amount is the end result. Outstdanding work by the Rotaract Club of UOIT – Durham College.

Next year is the 100th Anniversary of the Rotary Foundation and also the Rotary International Convention will be in Atlanta, Georgia and we hope at that time, we may have conquered Polio. “We are This Close”.

Carolina and Chad's Remarks:

Rotaract of DC/UOIT meet every Tuesday from 3-4pm. We currently have about 11 active members.

Last semester we:

  • Donated towards the Durham Region's Children's Aid Society's Sharon;s Kids program . We donated $50 that went to buying a kid a Christmas gift.
  • Polio fundraising included a booth where we had jars of candies, donated by the Grandparents of our member Brady Bodley. Students would pay one dollar to make a guess on the amount of candy in the jar. The one closest to the amounts won.
  • Attended 2015 Rotary District Conference at the Harbour Castle in Toronto. It was a great way to connect, especially since it was the first time, all the Rotaract clubs were able to meet, this Rotary year. Allowed us to network among ourselves as well as continue to build lasting relationships with Rotarians.
  • We had our “Meet and Greet” with Rotaractors and members of our two sponsoring Rotary Clubs: our own Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Whitby-Sunrise, where we had 4 new members get inducted as Rotaract members.

This semester we have:

  • Water project is in conjunction with the Science Council President and Rotaract member Chad Groves. We aim to put a speaking event on that will raise awareness on water quality issues, access, and water activism currently going on.
  • Cancer project, where we will be hosting France Scanga at UOIT. He will be attempting to break a Guinness world record by doing 20 speeches in 24 hours. Therefore throughout the semester we will be creating awareness and raise money that we will donate to him the day off, April 30th, 2016.
  • Shelter box fundraising will emulate fundraising we have done in previous years. By setting up a shelter box tent in the major atrium of our school we will aim to fundraise through raffling off swag kits and donations given.
  • OUR BIG EVENT ON MACRH 2, 2016 - PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

    1. It will be a night where students will get sit down with a professional (a mentor) and be able to ask a series of questions. This is a “speed dating” style kind of event. There will be many tables; tables for mentors, resumes, interviews, Volunteer and get to know what Rotary/Rotaract is about. For this event we ask that 5 Rotarian volunteers from our Rotary Club as mentors for that night.

    2. The event is happening on Wednesday March 2nd, 2016 from 7pm-9pm. We ask that the Rotarians that are interested to email us, confirming their attendance, along with the area they would like to help out in (mentorship, or Rotary/Rotaract table); If they choose mentorship be mentorship please mention please mention what area (ex. Engineer, business, etc.). We also need a small bio from the mentors, in order for us to create a booklet for that event.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK from President Mike McLaren:

There is no end to the adventures of what we can have if only we seek them with our yes open

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “ideal of service” is the key.

It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next.

It is an attitude and passion we all have, as Rotarians.
