Former CEO of the Altona Council, John Shaw, gave us an engaging review of his life, and professional career, sprinkled with many interesting stories. (Unfortunately he ran out time to discuss some of the highlights of his time as CEO of the Altona Council and his time with MAV- we need him back to cover this!).
John grew up on a farm in Fitzgerald Rd until aged 23, started driving tractors at 7, skipped 1 year of Primary School. Notable (unforgettable) experiences include being caught in the "Lara Grassfires" of January 1969, and catching Tiger snakes when this was permissible...
John was a keen sportsman, but not necessarily a great judge of the potential sporting prowess of others in their early days. (e.g. Gary Dempsey & Merv Hughes).
John had a stellar career in local Government, starting at Altona in 1964 with the filing, and rising to CEO of Altona Council until amalgamations occurred and CEO positions were all changed. John also spent time with MAV, as a Financial Planner, and with the Altona Memorial Park.
If John decides to join Rotary, he could be a sought after mentor for young professionals interested in a pursuing a career in Management or people leadership roles.
