There are 353,800 people living with dementia in Australia. Of that number, 3500 live in the ACT. Alzheimer’s Australia provides a large suite of services to people in dementia, family services, services to professional education and behaviour management. Jan will talk about dementia, its impact in the ACT and the services provided by Alzheimer’s Australia ACT. Jan Chorley has a background in the not for profits, local and Commonwealth Government at executive level. She has rolled out national health and human services strategies that have led to major change on the ground. She has undertaken leadership roles in reconciliation, children and family services, veterans and their families and education. Her specialities are community engagement, change management and building organisational capacity. Australian Hypocoristics - In comparison to other varieties of English, Australian English has a large inventory of a particular type of slang – called hypocoristics. These are words that are typically formed by reducing a word to its first syllable, after which a morpheme is added (e.g., biscuit-bickie, afternoon-arvo, sandwich-sanga). In this talk I will briefly outline the full range of hypocoristics and provide summaries of research that has investigated (i) hypocoristic coinage and use, and (ii) potential social Our guest speaker is Associate Professor Evan Kidd. Evan was born and raised inner-city Melbourne. He completed a Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Hons) at La Trobe University, and stayed on at La Trobe to complete a PhD in psycholinguistics. In 2003 he moved to Europe to work as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (Leipzig, Germany). In 2005 he began work as a Lecturer in Psychology at The University of Manchester, and in 2012 returned to Australia to work in the Research School of Psychology at The Australian National University. He mainly conducts research on children’s language acquisition, but is also interested in the unique properties of Australian English.

Neville Tomkins OAM JP On 30 June, Neville completed 6 years as the International Commissioner of Scouts Australia. Under Neville's leadership, International Scouting grew at an exponential rate. Neville was recently appointed by the Governor General and Chief Scout of Australia, Sir Peter Cosgrove, as the next Chief Commissioner of Scouts New South Wales. Previously Neville was the Chief Commissioner of the ACT Branch of Scouts Australia for a record 9 years. He is also the Vice Chair, Management Sub Committee, of the Asia Pacific Region of World Scouting. He has been a member of the National Executive Committee of Scouts Australia for the past 15 years. He is also the Chair of the Governance Sub Committee of Scouts Australia, and the National Co-ordinator for the Royal Commission and Redress. Neville also volunteers with the Australian Red Cross (with some 350 blood and plasma donations) and St Vincent's de Paul (raising funds for, and serving meals to, the homeless). After 35 years in the Australian Public Service, of which 25 years were in the Senior Executive Service, Neville recently retired to dedicate himself full time to volunteering. In 2010, Neville was decorated with the Medal of the Order of Australia "for service to the community particularly through leadership roles in the Scouting movement." Outline of talk During his talk, Neville will reflect on his 6 years as International Commissioner for Scouts Australia. In doing so, he will draw on the similarities between Scouts Australia and Rotary. He will also talk about the challenges of contemporary volunteer organisations such as Scouts Australia, and youth development organisations that intended to be "youth led and adult supported". He will conclude by offering views of the future as to what voluntary organisations need to do to "future proof" themselves and the role they can play on the international stage. |

Anyone could become a Carer at Any Time Dee McGrath has been the CEO of Carers ACT since 2005 and was previously a CEO of a member based non profit organisation for ten years. She holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration and Graduate Diploma in Marketing Communications and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Dee was a finalist in the Telstra Woman of the Year Award in the ACT. Dee has worked in senior management roles in Australia, the Middle East and Ireland. She has worked in destination tourism, hospitality and in Ireland was responsible for providing advocacy services in a large electoral community for a member of the Irish Parliament. Dee is a passionate advocate in influencing change so that the community recognise the contribution caring families make and that caring is accepted as a shared community responsibility. She strongly believes in continuous improvement and to ensuring caring families receive quality and responsive services. Dee's presentation will cover: Who are carers and what they do Profile of carers in the ACT and Australia What Carers Australia and Carers ACT do to support carers and the people they care for Environmental and political challenges - NDIS and Aged Care Reforms.

Angus Trumble, Director National Portrait Gallery in Canberra Towards a National Portrait Gallery Angus Trumble was born and educated in Melbourne, Australia. He studied Fine Arts and History at the University of Melbourne, graduating BA (Hons) in 1986. In summer 1987, he was an intern at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice. He studied for a year at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome, graduating MA (University of Melbourne) in 1993. From 1987 to 1991 he served as aide to Dr Davis McCaughey, A.C.,Governor of Victoria. In 1994 Angus won a Fulbright Scholarship for further study at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. He graduated MA (IFA/NYU) in January 1998. In January 1996 Angus was appointed Curator of European Art at the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide. He curated and wrote the catalogue of a number of exhibitions. Angus served as a Senior Curator of Paintings and Sculpture at the Yale Center for British Art from May 2003 to January 20014, when he took up his current appointment as Director of the National Portrait Gallery iin Canberra. He is author of A Brief History of the Smile (2003); The Finger: A Handbook (2010), and Edwardian Opulence: British Art at the Dawn of the Twentieth Century (2013).

Professor Graham Durant AM, Director Questacon Graham was appointed Director of Questacon in 2003. He is a highly experienced museum and science centre leader with a distinguished academic background and international reputation. Originally trained as a geologist at the University of Wales, Graham spent 25 years at the University of Glasgow where he was awarded a personal professorship in science interpretation and communication. In Scotland he played a significant role in the establishment of the Glasgow Science Centre which opened in 2001 and served as an advisor to the Scottish Executive. Graham helped develop the Inspiring Australian strategy and is an Honorary Professor at the Australian National University. He was awarded an AM in 2012. Graham has served six years as an ASTC Board Member and is a current member of the ASTC Global Committee. In this role he is a leading advocate for the development of the global science centre sector. Graham is a current Board member of the Australian Science Media Centre. |

ALAN FOSKETT OAM Mysteries of the Molongo
Alan is a well known Author and Historian in the Canberra and wider community. Alan worked in the Commonwealth Public Sector from 1950-1987 across many Departments including: the Ministry of National Development, the National Capital Development Commission, Department of Education and Science and the Capital Territory Health Commission and ACT Health Authority. Alan then moved to his own consultancy business where he worked till 1999. His main activity these days is researching, writing and publishing books about the history of Canberra and nearby, covering topics such as Canberra's hostel life and the social and economic significance of the hostel era; cricket in Canberra and Queanbeyan, ACT Education and Health, the Planning, Building and Development of Canberra; and the history of ACT organisations and sporting clubs. He has published more than 30 books since 1989.

David Trebeck is Chair of the ACT Selection Committee of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, a member of the Trust’s National Board and Chair of its Remuneration and Nominations Committee. He was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 1974. He has also been a non-executive director on six ASX boards, including GrainCorp and Incitec Pivot. He is President of the ACT Division of the Institute of Company Directors, Chair of Australia’s Oyster Coast Ltd and an independent member of the advisory board to the Corkhill family, which is developing a 10,000 dwelling residential project in West Belconnen, in a joint venture with the ACT Government. In addition, he spent over 20 years with economic consulting company ACIL as director, CEO or chairman, was a Commissioner of the National Water Commission, and had 10 years in senior roles with the National Farmers Federation and its predecessors. David has an honours degree in agricultural science, a masters degree in economics,is a Fellow of the AICD and received a Centenary of Federation Medal in 2001. |

Brian Goldstraw, Chair Rotary Australia World Community Service Ltd RAWCS Rotary Australia World Community Service Ltd. (RAWCS) is a limited company formed to support Australian Rotarians and Rotary Clubs in assisting disadvantaged communities and individuals with humanitarian aid projects. This is achieved through a range of activities including volunteering to provide training and programs such as Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM) and Donations In Kind (DIK). RAWCS operates financially through the Rotary Australia Overseas Aid Fund, Rotary Australia Benevolent Society and the Developed Country Disaster Fund to enable Rotarians, the public and the corporate sector to deliver humanitarian aid and charitable support. Brian will talk about the programs of RAWCS and how the RAWCS Committee assists Rotarians and Clubs with their humanitarian projects. The Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia Limited (CMCA) is the largest recreational vehicle (RV) club in the southern hemisphere with over 66,000 members and they are coming to Canberra to celebrate their 31st National Rally to be held at Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC) from 8 to 14 October 2016. An anticipated 1,000+ recreational vehicles will descend upon Canberra for this week long event and will contribute millions of dollars to the area's economy during their stay. It is likely that there will be something in the vicinity of $100,000,000 in recreational vehicles on site. Our meeting (Vocational Visit)on Monday 10 October will be held at EPIC. It will be hosted by the Rally Manager, the Chairman of the National Board and CEO. A light lunch will be provided where the above will address the Club. There will then be a walking tour of the site so please bring suitable shoes. Numbers will be restricted to 50. The parking area opposite the Flemington Road gates is now closed so we will be providing some parking inside EPIC but if you can carpool that would be good If you would like to have more leisurely viewing, the general public are invited to attend the CMCA Rally Open Day to be held on Saturday 8 October 2016 from 8am till 2pm. Entry will be gold coin donation and all proceeds of the day will go to our local designated charity, Snowy Hydro Southcare. Access would be from the Fresh Food Markets gate number 7. |

Ms Donna Murray, CEO Indigenous Allied Health Australia Ms Donna Murray is a descendant of the Wiradjuri nation of the Murrumbidgee River and of the Wonnarua nation of the Hunter Valley (NSW) and the Chief Executive Officer of Indigenous Allied Health Australia (IAHA), a national not for profit, member-based Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander allied health organisation. Donna provides strong strategic leadership across the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and wider allied health sector and has extensive experience in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership and governance, management, education and community development. Having worked in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs for over 25 years within government and community organisations at local, state and national levels, Donna has strong relationships and networks within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and related sectors. Donna will provide an update on the progress of the organisation since she previously addressed the Rotary Club of Canberra at the beginning of this year.

From Affective Computing to Robotic Sensing - Technological Advances in Health Care Professor Roland Goecke, University of Canberra Prof Roland Goecke is Professor of Affective Computing at the Faculty of Education, Science, Technology and Engineering, University of Canberra, Australia. He is the Head of the Vision and Sensing Group and the Director of the Human-Centred Technology Research Centre. He received his Masters degree in Computer Science from the University of Rostock, Germany, in 1998 and his PhD in Computer Science from the Australian National University, Canberra, Australia, in 2004. Before joining UC in December 2008, Prof Goecke worked as a Senior Research Scientist with Seeing Machines, as a Researcher at the NICTA Canberra Research Labs, and as a Research Fellow at the Fraunhofer Institutes for Computer Graphics, Germany. His research interests are in affective computing, pattern recognition, computer vision, human-computer interaction, multimodal signal processing and e-research. Prof Goecke has been an author and co-author of more than 130 peer-reviewed publications. His research has been funded by grants from the Australian Research Council (ARC), the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), the National Science Foundation (NSF, USA), the Australian National Data Service (ANDS) and the National eResearch Collaboration Tools and Resources project (NeCTAR).
