Melbourne Bearbrass
Nagambie Lakes Leisure Park
69 Loddings Ln
Nagambie, VIC 3608
Australia
WE HAVE ORGANISED A 12-SEATER BUS FROM DOCK LIBRARY TO AND FROM NAGAMBIE AND TO FERRY MEMBERS AROUND THE DISTRICT. SEE BELOW.
Also, when you book your villa at Nagambie Lakes Leisure Park, do it by phoning reception at 5794 2373 and mentioning Bearbrass/Tony Thomas. This gets you a 10% discount and you will be allocated a villa in our cluster rather than far and wide in the park.
Suggested itinerary
Monday:
Our stay is at Lake Nagambie Leisure Park, a complex of 100 lakeside villas only 95 minutes’ drive from the Melbourne CBD. Dozens of Probus Clubs overnight there annually, enjoying the waterfronts and noisy waterbirds and cockatoos.
A visit to Tahbilk winery is the highlight, 15km from the Leisure Park. We suggest arrival at Tahbilk Winery direct from Melbourne, as we can't check in to the Leisure Park until 2pm anyway. Tahbilk is Victoria’s oldest family-owned winery, like a time capsule. After coffee, members can enjoy the 45-minute Tahbilk billabong walk along easy pathways before lunch. (If wet, bring spare shoes).
We’ve booked for lunch at Tahbilk at 12.45pm and booked for an escorted tour starting 2pm of the cellars, working areas and museum ($10 per person paid to club prior).
In the afternoon we can take in some or all of Goulburn Weir, the mining ghost town of Graytown (population 20,000 in 1868) and the vestiges of the prisoner-of-war camp for Italians and Germans. (Prisoners included the crew of the Kormoran which sank HMAS Sydney).
We suggest Monday dinner from 6pm (Mains $20-30) at the Nagambie Rowing Club 3km from the Park, near the Black Caviar statue.
Tuesday:
If our numbers permit, we hope to get to Mitchelton Winery by riverboat, otherwise 15mins by road. Mitchelton’s beautifully designed winery and tower features Victoria’s largest commercial Aboriginal art gallery.
After lunch at Mitchelton or Fowles Winery nearby (Mains $35), we’re on free time. Sights include Ned Kelly’s Avenel (15 minutes drive), Heathcote (30 minutes) and Kirwans Bridge (1890), Victoria’s longest (310m) and crooked wooden bridge.
For dinner from 6pm we suggest the Park’s swish self-catering villa for a communal BBQ put together by your hard working events team ($15 upfront for food).
Wednesday morning:
Checkout by 10am and we head home – with a stop highly recommended at Seymour’s open-air Vietnam Wall and memorial. Arrival Buluk Park is before noon.
Rough budget:
Cabins/villas: Typically $60-75 per person per night (2 or 4 bed units). Book your own accommodation at http://www.nagambielakespark.com.au/booking/
Lunches: 2 @ $35
Dinner: 1 @ $20-30, 1 self-catered @ $15.
Tours, incidentals: $30 per day.
Riverboat (if possible) $TBA
Bus seat (if enough interest) $TBA - see below
Part 2: Transport
Public transport to Nagambie is poor and we have arranged our own 12-seater bus with member-driver Spike Sparkes. It departs Buluk Park by Dock Library at 9.30am Monday August 2, and returns before lunch Wednesday August 4. So far we have seven takers plus driver, and the cost per person is $85 for bus use for the three days including being ferried around the district on days 1 and 2. If we can get 3 more takers for seats the cost will come down to around $60 per person. (Insurance is a significant cost item for us).
