What’s lost, left and possible: navigating climate grief

Shawna has spent most of her career in mental health as a counselor or teacher, researching grief with clients and students. With a master’s degree in psychology and a PhD in environmental science, her recent research has focused on the intersection of climate change and mental health. Her new book is the culmination of what she’s learned about grief, stories from clients and students, and her own vision for a better future through refocusing our climate change anxieties on community-care, compassion, and self-love.

She lived in San Diego from 2020-2023 writing the book and, (thanks to this club), worked with the Walter Munk Foundation expanding their online education program. She currently spends most of her time in Minnesota and is always looking for a return route to San Diego.

During the presentation everybody will have an opportunity to reflect on how climate change has influenced what’s lost, left and possible. We will also take a deeper look at our emotional response to what’s lost, and talk through how we can use our emotions to motivate effective action for what is still possible.
