Barbara Ingram-Rice has been an Occupational Therapist since 1983 and practiced in  Sarasota & Manatee counties for over 30 years. Currently Barbara is also the primary caregiver for someone with dementia, so this topic is near and dear to her heart. Often people with dementia become very isolated as it becomes harder and harder for caregivers to take them out. One reason for this is that people in the community do not understand how to interact with persons with dementia. But being able to get out is important for the person with dementia to remain connected with society and to get the exercise of being away from home. The caregiver needs to go to a restaurant where they can be "taken care of" too for a change. This presentation, Dementia Friendly Communities, will help you recognize dementia and give you tools to better interact with persons with dementia when you meet them.
