April 10 Minutes
ROTARY MEETING – April 10, 2014
ATTENDANCE: Margaret Crofton, Jeanne Gitzel, Alf Hackenschmidt, George Horton, Lois Horton, Dayle Hughson, Bill Kichak, Diane Squair.
This meeting was an early one as we have an Auditorium performance tonight that is sold out. The coat check service may be busy.
George chaired this meeting. He thanked Jeanne for providing the Four Way Test blessing. We opened with O Canada and this blessing.
George asked what the theme for this month is – no one knew. He told us it is Magazine Month and pointed out the funny back cover for April.
It was mentioned out that the Easter Seal Organization was started by 10 Rotary Clubs. SMD – Society for Manitobans with Disabilities is part of this organization.
Rotary is the only Service Organization that has a seat at the United Nations.
Thanks were expressed to all who helped with the Guest Services at the Winter Fair.
The IANE (Inter-Provincial Association on Native Employment) Luncheon was held yesterday at the Victoria Inn. Dayle, Jeanne, George and Lois attended this event and our banner and other information was on display – Dayle is on their committee as a representative of Sunset Rotary, so we are classed as a sponsor.
Tonight we are looking after the coat check at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium (WMCA), tomorrow is the luncheon for the Salvation Army volunteers, and George and Lois are selling tickets for the Riverbank Discovery Centre Duck Race at the Home Show.
On April 16, at 9 a.m., the Brandon Noon Club is setting up for their Book Fair. Several of our members have volunteered to assist with this.
Next week will be our business meeting.
George passed around the glasses which will be given out at the Beer Tasting. We are reminded to keep selling tickets – the ones at the Liquor Mart are not going quickly. Alf needs tickets for Douglas and the Esso at Shilo.
George has had two replies from the commanding officers at Shilo. One will be coming to be a celebrity pourer, the other is unable to attend.
The Beer Tasting Committee will meet again on April 16. Three of the beers had to be replaced with other choices as the first ones were not available.
On Monday, April 7, Alf and George met with Barry and Chuck from the Noon Meeting. Alf gave a brief report on this. The presidents and presidents-elect have expressed a desire to do things for the good of Rotary in Brandon. There has been a suggestion that we develop a collective plan for membership and have coordinators from each club to develop this.
Rotary Day – February 23, does not work well here. The Burger Day was discussed and we can perhaps hold a Rotary Day at Princess Park in June – serving hot dogs and pop from 11 to 2. This would not be a Fundraiser, but rather a Friend-Raiser. The Noon Club has an 8 foot inflatable sign, and other banners that can be used. Lois has spoken to Don Partrick and he will look after the Shelterbox for this event.
There could be an opportunity for donations to Shelterbox from the community. Jeanne reported that she did this at Lilyfest in Neepawa one year, and they were able to raise $650 that the Neepawa Club donated to Shelterbox.
There was some discussion about a Response Team being established. Dayle pointed out that we already have one in Brandon via Salvation Army and the Red Cross. Shelterbox tents and equipment are only used for disasters appraised by that organization and cannot be purchased by individuals to distribute.
The Schedule for WMCA was discussed. We will provide coat checks for the following:
May 4 – 7:00 p.m. – Stuart McLean
May 8 – 7:30 p.m. – Alice in Wonderland
May 9 – 7:30 p.m. – Alice in Wonderland
May 14 – 7:00 p.m. – Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra
