President's Message

I had my 1st COVID shot this morning, and assuming I am at the meeting on Wednesday it all went well! There were a lot of people at the Albert Waterways Community Centre but the process was very efficient and I was in and out in under 30 mins including the compulsory 15 minutes sit downtime after I was vaccinated. It is good to see the Vaccine Rollout finally gathering some momentum.
The Gold Coast Business Expo is on Thursday June 24 at the Carrara Indoor Sports Stadium. Surfers Sunrise will again be helping with the ‘Bump-in’ and ‘Bump-out’ as well as will assisting with the Car Parking and having a Stand. Please get involved if you can as it is a great way to promote Rotary and Surfers Sunrise. Darrell Brown and Angus Miller will be calling for more helpers – 2 or 3 hours is all we ask.
This Sunday sees the first ‘Repair Café’ event at the Project Shed from 10am-1pm. The Gold Coast Tool Library runs these Repair Cafes - free events where volunteer menders and fixers invite the community to bring along their broken household items for repair. See more information in the Bulletin below and please support this event if you can.
Do you have a Local Charity you are passionate about? Please speak to me if you do as many in the club have expressed an interest in supporting some local charities in addition to our current projects.
And another reminder that Sunday 4th July is the Surfers Sunrise Winter Lunch and Changeover. This social lunch will be at Links Hope Island Golf Club. It’s a great venue and we look forward to seeing you all there for an afternoon of socialising.
See you Wednesday for Trent Belling’s Man Behind the Badge Presentation. Remember to head upstairs with your breakfast or coffee to catch up with your fellow Rotarians before the Meeting starts at 7.30am. Ian Mayberry is Chairman and Peter Morgan is on the Door.

This Wednesday 09 June: Trent Belling
This Wednesday, our newest member Trent Belling will reveal all of his secrets (well, some... ☺).  See you at the Surfers Paradise Surf Club. Grab your breakfast in the ground floor bistro and join us in the upstairs venue for some fellowship before the meeting starts at 07:30 am sharp.

Repair Shop and Tool Library at our Project Shed
No photo description available.
Our Repair Shop is a free event where our volunteer menders and fixers invite the community to bring along their broken household items for repair. The owner of the item is encouraged to join in and together we endeavour to make a repair. This has many benefits including encouraging social connections in the community, as well as transferring the skills and knowledge of repair, which can often be an intergenerational sharing as frequently it is the older generation who has the experience in repairing items.
We will also have an extensive range of refurbished bicycles for sale.
We will also trial a Tool Library. For example: Need a drill for a weekend? We'll have a licensed electrician who volunteers and he is the only repairer who touches 240V items.
Why not drop by at the Project Shed (see map) on Sunday 13th June, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm?

Winter Luncheon & Changeover at the Links Hope Island
Incoming President Paul Seymour and President Charles Thomasson cordially invite you, your partners and friends to join us at the  Winter Luncheon & Changeover on Sunday, 4th July 2021, at the Links Hope Island Golf Club.
This year, to maximize the social aspect, the format will be slightly changed: All formalities will be commenced immediately upon everyone being seated. It is planned to fit into a, say, 35 minutes time frame, after which we'll have a 3-course Luncheon (Vegetarian and Vegan options available), enjoying fellowship. Note: we deliberately title it 'Winter Luncheon'; we really would like our partners, family and friends to come along, making it a real social event!
Bookings are open now - please click on this link: - please book online, we need to provide exact numbers by 21st June.
Italian Christmas in July Long Lunch 22 July
Johnny Bueti is again organising an Italian Long Lunch, this time a 'Christmas in July' event, with plenty of Italian style Christmas dishes. Johnny already has secured a major sponsor: My Carte. The price includes all food, unlimited wine and beer, entertainment.  All proceeds go towards the X-Ray Unit and Blood Analyser for Vanuatu.  Note: COVID restrictions impose an upper limit of just 120 attendees. First come, best served.
Put it into your diary now: Thursday 22nd July 2021, from 12:00 pm.
Bookings are now open:
No idea when it will finish, but don't expect too much change from the afternoon... ☺
You are part of a bigger picture: Rotary Fellowships
<-- Birds who belong to the Human Watchers Fellowship...
With some 32,000 members worldwide, it would make sense that some special interest groups would form...
June is Rotary International's 'Fellowship Month'. There are dozens of different Fellowships, from Yachting to History to Jazz to Quilting. Quilting? Yes, quilting.  Boring? Well, how about Magicians? Wine? Bird Watching? Sorry my friend, not those...  But there is nothing to stop you from forming a new Fellowship if you want to!  Find details at the link below.
See Download Files on the right - there is an article that lists most of them, with direct links to their website or Facebook pages.
Rotary Fellowships are groups of Rotary members who
  • Share a common interest in recreational activities, sports, hobbies, or professions
  • Further their vocational development with others in the same profession or field
  • Enhance their Rotary experience by exploring new opportunities and making connections around the world

Do you have any good wheelchair photos?
In short: we'll have a dedicated website for the Wheelchair Trust, the Project Shed, the volunteers, seeking donations, and all the stuff we do.
We are looking for photos relating to our Wheelchairs, various buildings we put up over the years etc etc. If you have any, please upload them directly to a shared Google Drive KJ has set up for this:  Click here - it's dead easy - simply drag the photos from your folder into the 'Drop files here' field.  Note: You need to log in with a Google (as in Gmail) account.
Alternatively, feel free to copy them to a USB stick or CD and give them to Franz Huber.

Before you argue with someone, ask yourself: Is that person even mentally mature enough to grasp the concept of different perspectives? Because if not, there is absolutely no point.  Amber Veal
