President's Message

This Wednesday we have our Federal MP Angie Bell coming to speak to us at the Surf Club. We also have District Governor Andy Rajapakse visiting us. Please make every effort to make Wednesday’s meeting – Darrell Brown is on the Door (for Simon Brook, Ed.) and Ray Higgs is Chairman.

The Club Board and the Wheelchair Trustees have ‘signed off’ on the new Wheelchair Trust website with only some minor changes recommended. As such, the new website will be officially launching very soon. Thanks again to everyone involved who have spent a huge amount of time on this project – as I mentioned last week the new website is going to be a huge asset for the Wheelchair Trust going forward in both promoting our projects but also for allowing people to donate directly through the website.

Surfers Sunrise is in good shape from a membership and financial position which gives us the strength to pursue projects that are important to us. If you are passionate about a project let us know as Rotary is about uniting people to take action to create lasting change – just look at our Wheelchair Project and the 10,000+ people around the world we have helped. I would also recommend bringing a guest along to a meeting if you can to introduce them to Rotary and Surfers Sunrise – why not start with this Wednesday when we have such a high profile speaker!

See you Wednesday morning at 7am and remember to order your Breakfast and take it upstairs to eat together.

More feedback from South Africa
It's always a great pleasure to receive news from "end users" of our wheelchairs.  Here is an update from Heather Howard of the Rotary Club of Port Alfred, South Africa, one of the clubs which was allocated about 40 from a container we recently sent there (refer bulletin of 27th January 2021 for last update):

Just in case you were wondering about our progress, we write to confirm that we have distributed almost all our 20 wheelchairs and have been given two extra by Kenton because we have found such a need here.
We have sourced the recipients through the local health clinics which has proved very effective, and have been travelling round delivering the chairs to excited and grateful people, young and old, or their carers.
As soon as we have completed the distribution, we’ll be reporting to you with signed forms and the relevant photograph on each form, and also with a report.
In the meantime, we attach a newspaper cutting featuring the story. [You can download it for full viewing - see Download Section on the right. Ed.]

There is a good chance that we'll hook up to have a Zoom meeting soon - watch this space!

District 9640 Conference is in less than 3 weeks
On Saturday 15th May 2021, our District 9640 will hold its Conference at Twin Towns Conference Centre.  In view of the COVID situation, the format is a one day event. This brings the cost down to just $60.00 per head ($20 for Rotaractors and $10 for Interactors) which includes morning tea break and Lunch.  Registrations close on 1st May (less than two weeks away), or when the maximum of 500 seats have been sold out.

Among the hugely interesting keynote speakers is Jason Browne (via Zoom), Public Image Co-Ordinator, Zone 28 & 29, Pennsylvania State University Rotary Club, on "Can we make M&M's in Rotary?"  Click here for more information and to book.
Do you have any good wheelchair photos?
In short: we'll have a dedicated website for the Wheelchair Trust, the Project Shed, the volunteers and all the stuff we do.

We are looking for photos relating to our Wheelchairs, various buildings we put up over the years etc etc. If you have any, please upload them directly to a shared Google Drive KJ has set up for this:  Click here - it's dead easy - simply drag the photos from your folder into the 'Drop files here' field.

Inspirations - well, sort of... 280421
Andy Bell's post of the week:
Yesterday, I saw an ad that said 'Radio for Sale, $1.00. Volume stuck on full'.
I thought, I can't turn that one down.
[don't shoot the messenger! Ed.]

Don't be worried about your Smartphone or your TV spying on you.  Your vacuum cleaner has been collecting dirt on you for years.

Political language−and with variations this is true of all political parties, from Conservatives to Anarchists−−is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable. and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.  George Orwell, 'Politics and the English Language' - 1946  [Of course, at that time he was writing about the British Parliament in 1946, not on parliaments of 2021. Or was he?  Like his major work '1984'... Ed.]

In commemoration of yesterday's ANZAC day:

After combat it’s ironic.
Tales of loss become iconic
when a slaughter ground of chaos grows to make a nation proud.
So your service is remembered
where your body was dismembered
and your honour is imbedded in a legendary shroud.

And they come and weep in mourning
when the light of day is dawning,
and the hymn of their condolence conjures visions of your plight.
But they cannot know the sorrow
I must feel as each tomorrow
I’m reminded of your torment through your tiny cross of white.
