This is my first report as Past President. Our new President and ‘the First Bloke’ have arrived safely in the UK and preparations for the second biggest wedding to hit the UK this year are well underway. Last report I had from them was that Jo had bought so much stuff from Harrods that there was a risk it would need to close down in order to restock.
I am sure those who attended will agree with me that our Club Changeover was a roaring success. The venue was fantastic, the food terrific and the ‘vibe’ sensational. A huge thankyou to all who made the day so wonderful, with a special thanks to the ladies who supplied the desserts.
Congratulations to all who received awards, all very well deserved. However, I would like to highlight a couple of people who didn't receive awards, but do deserve special recognition. One is a member of our club the other is not. Chris Thurtell works tirelessly and without fanfare with our Exchange Students. He dedicates many hours every week to ensuring their welfare and the program laid out for them is fulfilled. Great work Chris. Sue Smith, wife of Richard, is a person who in my opinion epitomises the Rotary spirit. Sue is always the first to volunteer when a task needs doing and she does it with great aplomb and humour. Thanks Sue.
I don't want to put words in our Presidents mouth, but I believe this is going to be the biggest and the best year ever for the Rotary Club of Surfers Sunrise.
If you can’t change it or fix it don't stress it……….just sayin.
Note: Different venue: This will serve as a "trial meeting" for a potential new meeting venue. We'll meet at Freshwater Point Resort, Broadbeach, 33 T E Peters Dr, Broadbeach Waters QLD 4218. The caterers require us to give them numbers, so please callor email to Franzno later than Tuesday 09:00 am whether your are attending or not (yes, either way!).
They'll put up a sumptuous buffet style breakfast - cost of $20.00 per person. Charles Thomasson will run a training style introduction to Social Media, in particular Instagram and Facebook, and how we can use this not just to communicate among each other, but also spread our message to potential members. See you there!
Jacinta Veitch, a friend of our newly baked President Jo Gorman, came along specially to take lots of photos during our luncheon last Sunday at the Kurrawa Surf Club. Rosie Rocco has put them up on a Google Drive for you to view - click on this link. Some real pearlers in there!
Last Wednesday 20th June, Angus Miller, Mario Fairlie, Richard Smith, Gerald East and Franz Huber were joined by Kate Woodham from the Rotary e-Club of Next Gen to assist at the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) event at All Saints Anglican College. OK, perhaps a bit far fetched, but seeing them sitting in the front row, aren't they, in effect, Teacher's Pets?
Set for Wednesday 11th July: The Lutzy Award presentation, in conjunction with the Surfers Paradise SLSC. We'll hold this at the Surfers Paradise SLSC Club (upstairs) on The Esplanade, Surfers Paradise. Usual time - meet 07:00 for 07:15 start. Plated breakfast will be served at a one-off price of $15.00 (normally $20.00) per person.
On the 18th July 2018, we will have a dinner instead of breakfast. The occasion? We will host four recipients of the Rotary Peace & Conflict Resolution Scholarship, currently studying at the University of Queensland campus. They'll visit the Gold Coast to do a presentation on what they do, what they are planning to do after their studies and how they will make a difference. Organized by the Rotary Club of Surfers Sunrise, this is a Multi-Club meeting with partners and friends. It will be held at the Surfers Paradise RSL Club. So far, the Rotary Clubs of Burleigh Heads, Surfers Paradise, Nerang, Broadbeach and Southport as well as a number of individuals have accepted our invitation to join. Also a wonderful opportunity to bring along a prospective member. All Rotary clubs are invited to join - the venue can cater for as many as 200 people. Who will speak? Check the PDF on the Download section on the right with photos and bios!
Cost of just $22.00 per head includes plate served dinner, coffee/tea and free parking for the first 3 hours at the Bruce Bishop Car Park across the road! You must book - click on the link above. Cash Bar open right next to the dining room.
Duty Roster - note: subject to change. Please check every week:
New duty: Fellowship. What does it entail? Your job is to ensure that all members, in particular new members, visitors and guests, and in particular the Guest Speaker, are welcomed, are introduced to other members and are comfortable. If required, explain the usual procedures, e.g. when we have our meal, when the speaker is expected to be at the rostrum etc.
Your Editor's recent visit to a local High School (in connection with the RYDA program) inspired me to "research" teaching:
Teacher: "Where is your homework?"
Pupil: "I lost it when I was fighting this guy who said that you weren't the best teacher in this school!"
If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people together to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.” Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
