Geoff Croad has been offered another Bunnings BBQ slot on Sunday 21st November 2021. Please support Geoff as this is a great chance to raise much needed funds.

Paul O’Neill is running a Gold Coin Donation at Horizon Shores Boat Show on Friday 19th, 20th & 21st November. This is a good opportunity to raise funds as well as a possibility to turn this into an annual fund raising event.

We have received the latest updated proposal from Chumani Brooks and her team from 180 Degrees Consulting and will be looking to formalise this agreement moving forward after final discussion at the next board meeting.

A reminder to all Board members our next board meeting is this Wednesday at 7:00am at the Surfers Paradise SLSC.

Yes, TWO fundraisers this coming weekend!
In addition to the Bunnings Sausage Sizzle on Sunday 21st November (organiser: Geoff Croad), our new member Paul O'Neill is arranging a roster to collect Parking Fee Gold Coins at the Horizon Shores Boat Show this coming weekend, from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st November 2021.  It is at 80 Cabbage Tree Point Road Steiglitz 4207 (Jacob's Creek). This could, of course, result in an annual fundraiser.

Two people required for each time slot:

Friday 19th November, 3:45 pm to 7:30 pm
Saturday 20th November, 08:30 am to 12:00 pm
Saturday 20th November, 11:45 am to 4 pm
Sunday 21st November, 08:30 am to 12:00 pm
Sunday 21st November, 11:45 am to 4 pm

Paul has arranged all the gear (buckets, vests, Square terminals etc).

Of course, why not stay and check out the boats while you are there? Click here for tickets to the boat show
Last Wednesday: Bill Edgar – The Coffin Confessor
It’d be unusual for guest speakers at Rotary meetings to have experienced living on the street or having seen the inside of Boggo Road Jail (and I don’t mean as a tourist). Nor would they professionally disrupt funerals. And be paid 10,000 dollars doing just that – compliments of the deceased.

But that, in 50 words, tells you the basics of this extraordinary man. Bill Edgar, last Wednesday’s guest speaker, briefly started by outlining his career: from living on the streets of Surfers Paradise, to gaining a full scholarship at a prestigious private school (and leaving it), to becoming a nightclub bouncer, to becoming a licensed Private Detective. But what is quite unique about Bill is his self-described business: ‘The Coffin Confessor’ started off when one of his clients, on his death bed, engaged him to – literally – “crash” his upcoming funeral and interrupt the service. His client, very unhappy to find out that his best mate was trying to have an affair with his wife, wanted it to be known to everyone.

They are not necessarily all as vindictive as that. Take another one of his clients, the Sergeant of one of the big bikie gangs: he desired to be buried together with his Harley. “Can’t be done!” they said. “Can be done indeed!” said Bill, and arranged it. Another wanted to be sure that his family wouldn’t find out about his very deep secret; all evidence was to be removed. The evidence? In his basement, he had a sex dungeon…

Bill makes sure that it is all proven and above board: everything is pre-investigated to ensure it is true, all interviews are recorded. Meanwhile, Penguin has published his book and he has secured a deal for the movie rights.  Like to get a more detailed account? Get Bill’s book The Coffin Confessor!
Anyone knows a concreter "with heart"?
We would like to put down a concrete slab at our Project Shed and are looking for a concreting company "with heart" who will give us a very special price. This drawing outlines details - a high-resolution version and more specific details are of course available.  Please contact Larry Murray directly if you can refer someone.
Last chance to order Christmas cakes
Mario Fairlie is again coordinating the purchase of the Rotary Christmas cakes. They are yummy, beautifully fruity, moist.  Note, contrary to previous advice we accept orders for either of those packed in a tin @$17.50 or in a carton @$16.50. Please order with Mario directly; payment required in cash on delivery. Click here to send him an email, or call him on his mobile. NOTE: absolute deadline for orders is COB coming Wednesday 17th November 2021.

Snippets of last week’s meeting 101121

Darrell Brown was at the door, Mitch Brown was Chairman. We had apologies from Graeme Isaacson, Brian Pearson and Larry Murray.

President Paul Seymour welcomed all members and guests: David Blackmore (guest of Angus Miller), Ellen and Jaqueline Wark (yes, they are sisters!), promoting the upcoming Rotary Youth Leadership Camp (RYLA) in January next year, our regular Rotaractors Kristen ‘KJ’ Jewson, Matt Hayward and, of course, our guest speaker Bill Edgar (see separate article above).

After Bill’s excellent presentation, Ellen and Jacqueline Wark briefly outlined what RYLA is all about. The next camp is from Tuesday 22nd to Sunday 30th January 2022 – only two months away! Our club has always supported RYLA applicants. Click on this link for details.

Ray Higgs elaborated on a huge opportunity relating to hospital equipment which the GC University Hospital offers to donate: valued at around $20 Million (at original purchase value), some 71 food trolleys and corresponding “docking station” refrigeration equipment is available. It would fill some 3 x 40’ containers. We have a ready taker, a hospital in Papua New Guinea, but storage would need to be arranged until shipment can take place, at a total cost of around $7,500. Possibly, this could become a joint project with two other clubs? There will be further discussion on this at this Wednesday’s board meeting.

President Paul also briefly elaborated on our cooperation with 180 Degrees Consulting (see last week’s bulletin), as well as a joint project with Express Recycling to collect cans and bottles for Containers for Change. Paul also urged all to keep Workplace Health & Safety in mind when working at the shed, to ensure that we don’t “overestimate” our capabilities.  More about this in next week's bulletin.

Charles Thomasson and Treasurer Doug Lipp elaborated on the results of our recent fundraising events, the Italian Long Lunch and the Golf Day. Almost $10,000 were raised. Thank you for your sterling efforts, Johnny, Charles, Doug and all the helpers! Gerald East advised that the Polio Plus Movie pre-view event has been postponed to March 2022.

Inspirations - well, sort of... 171121
The only thing I ever want to hear at my funeral is "Look! It's moving!"

Now in a well-ordered republic it should never be necessary to resort to extra-constitutional measures; for although they may for the time be beneficial, yet the precedent is pernicious, for if the practice is once established of disregarding the laws for good objects, they will in a little while be disregarded under that pretext for evil purposes. Niccolo Machiavelli, Italian diplomat and philosopher, 'The Discourses', approx 1513
