Based on the current COVID regulations and subject to not having a re-imposition of lockdowns again), we can confirm:
  • This Wednesday's meeting (see article below) will go ahead
  • The Project Shed will re-open this coming Saturday 14 August 2021
  • The Lutzy Awards has been postponed to the meeting of Wednesday, 15th September 2021
  • The Italian Long Lunch – Supporting Rotary has been rescheduled to Thursday October 7th 2021
The board members, under the chairmanship of Geoff Croad, had a zoom meeting with 180 Degrees Consulting at Bond University, a Not for Profit group, (Callum Hamilton, Joshua Waite, Georgia Farmer and Amy Thompson, who are a part of the 180DC executive), exploring avenues on where they may be able to assist in getting more exposure for Surfers Sunrise Rotary. 180 Degrees will come back with a proposal as to how they can assist.

This week: Social meeting at the Surfers SLSC
This coming Wednesday 11/08/21, we'll have a Social breakfast at the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club. Without doubt, some of us have "withdrawal symptoms"! Meet at the downstairs bistro at 07:00 for some fellowship and a good ol' chinwag.

Project Shed to open again this coming Saturday
If no new COVID restrictions come into effect, the Project Shed will open again this coming Saturday morning, 14th August.  Note: usual regulations apply (Masks, social distancing, check in etc).  See you there!

Wednesday 18/08/21: your input is requested
The 'formal' meeting on Wednesday 18/08/21 (COVID regulations permitting) is designated to President Paul Seymour to outline his vision for the Rotary year 2021-22.  It is also a Club Assembly, so that is the time for members to come up with constructive criticism, ideas for programs, fundraisers, and of course, questions.

So, why not jot down a few notes?
Why would one want to join Rotary?
There are many reasons. But the most obvious ones are often overlooked:

The Opportunity to Serve
Rotarians provide service at both the community and international levels. Our club, Surfers Sunrise is most prominent in International Service (our Project Shed) and Youth Services, where we support a broad spectrum of events. Being a member gives you the fulfillment that comes from giving back to the community.

Professional Networking
A founding principle of Rotary was to provide a forum for professional and business leaders. Members are leaders in business, industry, the professions, the arts, government, sports, the military, and religion. They make decisions and influence policy. Rotary is the oldest, most prestigious service club organization in the world.

Personal Growth and Development
Membership in Rotary ensures continuing personal development. Leadership, public speaking and communication, organization and planning, team-building and fundraising are just a sampling of the skills that can be exercised and enhanced through Rotary.

Friendship
Fellowship was a primary reason Rotary was started in 1905, and it remains a major attraction. Today, with more than 32,000 Rotary clubs in over 200 countries, Rotarians have friends wherever they go. Rotary helps to build community as well as enduring friendships. Did you know that you can join any Rotary club meeting in any country in the world? No need to be invited. You can simply turn up and say

"G'day!, I'm from the Surfers Sunrise Rotary Club, on the Gold Coast..."

There is a person whom you thought to invite.  Do it now.!
Italian Long Lunch: postponed again
We had to postpone it again, it's now on Thursday 7th October 2021, from 12:00 pm (the current COVID rules would only allow maximum 60 people). All people who have booked have been notified. All tickets have been sold out, but if any cancellations were to come in, Johnny has a waiting list.  If you want to be on that list, please contact him directly.

There will be plenty of Italian style Christmas dishes. Johnny has secured a major sponsor: My Carte, and a number of corporate tables have been sold as well. The price includes all food, unlimited wine and beer, entertainment.  All proceeds go towards the X-Ray Unit and Blood Analyser for Vanuatu.  Note: COVID restrictions impose an upper limit of just 120 attendees.

Duty Roster

<-- Andy Bell's post of the week [don't shoot me! I'm only the piano player]

What good is it to throw yourself in front of a steamroller out of moral principles and then be crushed flat like a sock emptied of its foot? Better to fade into the crowd, the piously praising, unctuous, hatemongering crowd. Better to hurl rocks than to have them hurled at you. Margaret Atwood, ‘The Testaments’

Gerald's post of the week:
On average, a Panda feeds for approximately 12 hours a day.
This is the same as an adult at home under quarantine. That is why we call it a 'Pandemic'.
[Editor's note: if, like the Panda, you only eat bamboo shoots, that's quite ok! ☺]

How ordinary people say it: "I can't go out because of the virus".
Instead say: "I've sworn an oath of solitude until the pestilence is purged from our lands."
That sounds more principled, valiant and heroic. They'll be looking for your sword...
