This Wednesday morning we celebrate the ‘Lutzy’ Award – it is a big day for Surfers Sunrise Rotary Club and if you haven’t yet booked please do asap. [Online bookings have closed. Please call Graeme Isaacson directly if you haven't booked yet. Ed.] The ‘Lutzy’ is presented to a young member of Surfers Paradise Surf Lifesaving Club in memory of our Charter Member Keith Lutz, who was also a major mentor and driving force in the Surf Life Saving Movement. Thank you to Ray Higgs & Graeme Isaacson for your efforts organising and to Andy Bell & Mario Fairlie for arranging sponsorship of the Surf Rescue Board that is awarded to the winner of the ‘Lutzy’.

There is a huge amount of activity going on in the Club at the moment. But before I get on to that it is time to celebrate some recent achievements by the Wheelchairs Project Shed and Surfers Sunrise – last week we receive thanks from both the Rotary Club of Honiara and from the Rotary Club of Port Moresby for Wheelchairs recently delivered for people in need.  Please see Franz’s report below and the photo gallery and well done to everyone involved!

Past President Mario Fairlie & I met with a representative of the Encounter Church in Labrador on Saturday morning. The great news is that they are ready and able to take possession of Surfers Sunrise Sleeping Sanctuary’s or ‘PODS’ as they are manufactured at the Shed. We hope to deliver the first couple of PODS by the end of October. Well done Mario for driving this project and ensuring its success.

Past President Mario last week also hosted representatives from Broadbeach and Gold Coast Rotary Clubs in regards to our joint Pentecost Island Project. Progression is being made – I will ask Mario to give an update to the Club at the formal meeting next week, on October 7th.

The Shed is, as always, a hive of activity with the volunteers busy with a number of projects and many members of the club there on a regular basis. Special mention to President Elect John Chirio who is putting in a huge effort to sort bikes for the BIG BIKE SALE on Saturday November 14th which will be run in conjunction with the ’10,000th Wheelchair Celebration’. As I mentioned last week the organising team for November 14th led by Karen Holland and Larry Murray is working hard behind the scenes getting all permits in place.

PDG Darrell Brown will soon be asking for volunteers for the Gold Coast Small Business Expo on Thursday October 15. We will be assisting through the event setup and by organising the car parking as we have done in previous years.

Organisation is going very well for the Golf Day on Monday October 26  – we already have 10 Corporate Teams confirmed (last year we had 6 in total). This is one of our major fundraisers for the year so please get involved by either playing, sponsoring or volunteering.

I look forward to seeing you all at the Surf Club for the Lutzy Award this Wednesday.

Kind regards,

Charles Thomasson
President 2020-21

This Wednesday: Lutzy Award presentation
This Wednesday, on 30th September, our club will present the 'Lutzy' Award to a young emerging Surfing Club leader.  Ray Higgs and Graeme Isaacson have arranged for a VERY special deal with the caterers at the Surf Club: a plated meal for just $10.00!  But we need to advise your choice of 5 menu options: Acai Bowl (very healthy, gluten free, vegan), or either poached or fried eggs with either bacon or sausages and toast.  Of course, partners and friends are most welcome too. The online booking site has now closed. Any enquiries, please call Graeme Isaacson.

Wheelchairs have arrived in PNG and Solomon Islands
Sometimes we might be a bit remote, a bit detached from the results of our work to manufacture the 'Rough Terrain Wheelchairs', raising the funds and the organisation of getting them shipped. So it is great to receive two separate messages, one from Papua New Guinea, one from the Solomon Islands, confirming that the goods have arrived and are being distributed. The photo on the left is from the Reverend Hoge Ramura from PNG, who wrote

"Good day to you all good Rotarians in Rotary club of Surfers Sunrise in Qld, Australia.
I am a retired Reverend, Hoge with my wife Vagahu Rabura of the Rotary Club of Port Moresby in Papua New.
We have great interest to volunteer in the Wheelchair Trust project in the your club...
I am 63 yrs old and my wife 58 yrs old.... We also do other social work like volunteering in the Prisoners Bible teaching, and are facilitators in HIV AIDS, TB, GBV, etc trainings.
But, our interest is in volunteering in the Wheelchair project..
Can we have a chat re the above request and please show me the correct form of communication...
Please see some of the wheelchair donations pictures, we did on behalf of Rotary club Port Moresby... within Port Moresby and outside...
There is great need for wheelchairs for all ages, we want thank your club again for such support.... Many thanks
Rev Hoge and Vagahu Rabura.

Shortly after, Col Laurenson forwarded a couple of photos from Honiara, Solomon Islands. They, as well as a lot more from PNG - see our Photo Album Section, together with a couple of photos sent from Honiara, Solomon Islands.  Fellows, give yourself a pat on the back!
Next Wednesday 7th Oct: District Governor's visit
Normally, this would be a social meeting, however, District Governor Andy Rajapakse will honour our club with his official visit, so this will be a club business meeting, which will be held upstairs in the usual way.
Golf Day 2020 set for 26th October
It's been decided: this year's Golf Day will be held on Monday, 26th October 2020.  Projected to be held at the same location as last year, the  Surfers Paradise Golf Club on Fairway Drive.  We'll need both volunteers to man the course, and of course we need participating teams.  Check out the flyer in the Download section on the right.

The further you travel from those you admire, the more wrong people become until the only conclusion you’re left with is that entire tranches of the human population are stupid, evil or insane. Which leaves you, the single living human who’s right about everything, the perfect point of light, clarity and genius, who burns with godlike luminescence at the centre of the universe.
