We have again been given the opportunity for a Bunnings BBQ on Friday 10th December, please contact Geoff Croad if you are available to assist.
The project shed has been approached by Thirroul Men’s Shed (Thirroul is a suburb of Woolongong, NSW) offering to provide support for the assembling of wheelchairs. Larry Murray is investigating the possibility of working together.
We are currently receiving quotes to provide a new concrete area at the project shed with a view of applying for a grant to complete the necessary works.
Grace from Bunnings Southport has offered the project shed a stand inside Bunnings at a community night, held on Thursday, 9th December from 6pm - 8pm. They put it on each year with a free BBQ and fun things for kids to do. They would like us to organise the stand with, say, a couple of wheelchairs, donation box, Rotary Flags and handouts. Maybe we could also have a number of kid's bikes as give-aways. This is a great opportunity to get greater exposure and also support Bunning who have been very good in supporting Surfers Sunrise.
This is the first time ever that Motorsport even figured among the awardees. Good to see Ian’s lifelong service as a Clerk of the Course on hundreds of Supercar races is recognised. Our hearty congratulations, Ian!

Here are some photos sent to us by Charmaine Wheatley, our "go-between" with the South African Rotary clubs. We sent a container there a few months ago. The distribution is organised by some 12 different South African Rotary clubs there. These wheelchairs went to Lesotho, a high altitude, landlocked small country in southern Africa. See also some relevant files to this project in our Download section on the right.
Paul O’Neill was at the door, Geoff Croad was Chairman. We had apologies from President Paul Seymour, Gerald East and Brian Pearson.
On behalf of Paul Seymour, Immediate Past President Charles Thomasson welcomed all members and our visitor David Blackmore (guest of Angus Miller). Charles made special mention, congratulating Ian Mayberry on receiving the Qld Government Sports Award, as well as on the photos we received via our go-between with the South African Rotary clubs, Charmaine Wheatley, of some of our wheelchairs reaching the high country of Lesoto in Southern Africa (see separate articles above).
Regrettably, we didn’t have a guest speaker [as it turned out, due to a minuscule communication error – aka as to make errors is human, to really stuff things up you need a computer… ☺ Angel Flight will join us definitely in the new year. Ed.] we made good use of the time to discuss club business more extensively than normal:
Paul O’Neill and Geoff Croad reported on their fundraising activities on the weekend – the Horizon Boat Show (mostly manned by Rotaractors) and the Bunnings Sausage Sizzle on Sunday respectively. Another sizzle is coming up on Friday 10th December. Bunnings also invited us to participate in their Community event. Surfers Sunrise will participate and also donate some children’s bicycles to be raffled or donated.
Wheelchair Trust Chairman Larry Murray and Mario Fairlie extensively elaborated on the happenings at the Project Shed, our involvement with the 180 Degrees organisation to promote our websites, and the Vanuatu project. Of specific interest: the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Vanuatu Health Department has been signed by them. Larry also invited us all to come along to the shed’s Christmas party on Saturday 11th December.
Note: 180 Degrees will be our guest speaker(s) on the meeting of 12th January 2022.
District Youth Chairman PDG Darrell Brown wants more applicants for the upcoming Youth programs: RYTS (Rotary Youth Transition Seminar, Year 11-12, 17 – 22 January 2022), RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, 19 – 29 year olds, 25 – 30 January 2022).
Duty Roster - note: subject to change - please check every week. Note: Fellowship duty also is expected to be at the Project Shed on the Saturday following the meeting
