President's Message

Resolved: The Club allocate $3,300.00 for Youth Programs in the 2022 – 2023 Rotary year’, so reads one of the motions approved at last Wednesday’s board meeting. It was proposed by PDG Darrell Brown, who is not only Co-Chairman of Youth the entire District, but also stood in as our club’s Youth Director.

Surfers Sunrise has, over the past 30-odd years, continuously supported Rotary’s entire broad spectrum of youth programs. Our incoming Director of Youth for 2022-23, Ashleigh Symes, is assured of the funds required to carry on the tradition.

From the highly prestigious National Youth Science Forum (remember Sophia Seumanhu who recently presented at our club?), via RYPEN (Zahra Forbitt, who attended the recently held camp, will tell us all about it on 22nd June), RYTS, RYLA, to the international Youth Exchange program. Certainly not least is our annual Lutzy Award, which recognises an emerging leader in the Surf Life Saving movement with a $2,500 surf ski, in close association with the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club.

Another program we regularly contribute manpower to is RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness), a one-day program that aims to reduce the number of road traffic accidents involving young drivers. This Wednesday, we will hear from Peter & Melinda McGuiness, who are running an alternative program.

Don’t forget to put your names down for the Small Business Expo on 15/16th June and book for the Changeover Luncheon on 2nd July (see stories below).

Kind regards
President Paul Seymour.

Stories
This coming Wednesday 25th May: Peter & Melinda McGuiness
Peter McGuiness, together with his wife Melissa, founded You Chose Road Safety, a youth-led mission to change driving culture from legacy paradigms of ‘luck’ to the empowerment of choice. Their 18-year-old son, Jordan, was speeding and under the influence of alcohol and drugs when he drove his car into a stationary vehicle. His choices killed four young victims in the other car and also himself.

Changeover Luncheon set for Saturday 2nd July
This year we'll have a Luncheon Changeover. Incoming President Mitch Brown has selected Bambino's Italian Ristorante in Benowa. Very interesting menu of shared platters of various pizzas (including vegetarian) and pasta (Carbonara, Truffle Pappardelle... just to name a few. And dessert pizza, of course. Did you say Dessert Pizza? Yup. You'll have to be there. Put it into your diary now. You must book: click on this link:

District has set up a flood donation account
District Governor Jeff Egan recently wrote a letter (see Download section on the right) to all Rotarians in District 9640, advising that a dedicated Flood Appeal account has been set up for Rotarians (and anyone else, for that matter) to contribute to a flood appeal to benefit victims of the horrendous floods some regions experienced over the past two weeks. As is common for any Rotary-based appeals, there will be no administration fees, director's remunerations etc. All funds end up directly at the target, the people who were affected.

If a donor does not require the donation to have tax deductibility status, it is preferable that donations should be deposited into the following account:
Rotary International District 9640 Ltd.
BSB: 084462, Account No: 816279059
This is the account to which Rotary clubs should donate.

If tax deductibility is required, please use this account:
Keith Wilson Relief Trust Fund
BSB: 633000 Account No: 175308303
The name of the donor needs to be included on the deposit AND please send via email to PDG Sandra Doumany at srmd@bigpond.net.au (Note: the original post had a typo - this is the correct address): 1. the name of the donor 2. the amount of the deposit 3. any requirement for the donation to be spent on a specific area (if requested).

The consensus after the election is that 50% of the voters think that 50% of the voters have lost their mind.
Some of you may now feel like practicing lalochezia [ lăl′ō-kē′zē-ə ]. Under the circumstances, this is perfectly understandable.
(There. I knew you wanted to learn a new word. Go on! look it up! )

I think we should get rid of democracy. All in favour, raise your hand.
