President's Message

[President Paul asked me to ‘ghost write’ his message for this week, as he is fully tied up with the bequest our Wheelchair Trust is about to receive. Ed.]
The last President's Message before the Changeover Luncheon, this coming Saturday, 2nd July. By the way: have you booked? There are still some members who either don't read their emails or, if they do, simply ignore the call to either book or to send an apology. The Changeover is one of the important events of any Rotary club, ours included. So, please let us know either way, no later than tomorrow Tuesday night. See the link further on in this bulletin.
Some really good news and some outstandingly excellent news: At the District Changeover on the weekend, Surfers Sunrise was awarded District 9640's 'Best Long Term Project Award' in recognition of our Wheelchair Trust which has been in operation since 1997. Congratulations to all who were instrumental in setting this up and who are keeping on keeping on, making wheelchairs and buildings for disadvantaged communities in developing countries.
The 'outstandingly excellent' news? Sounds almost like one of those emails from Nigeria. But no, this one is real! Our Wheelchair Trust has been included in a will, which should be settled in the near future. Our charter member Peter Morgan, who is also a Trustee, has done an awful lot of paddling under the surface, as there was some ambiguity in the paperwork. Thank you Peter! More about it as we get closer to it.

Best Long Term Project: and the winner is...
Surfers Sunrise wins the Best Long Term Project Award for 2021-22. At today's District Changeover, District Governor 2021-22 Jeff Egan presented our club with this award in recognition of our long term Wheelchair Trust project. Give yourself a pat on the back! Photo shows District Treasurer Mark Twyford who accepted the award certificate on behalf of our club.
Have you booked for the Changeover Luncheon this Saturday 2nd July?
This year we'll have a Luncheon Changeover. Incoming President Mitch Brown has selected Bambino's Italian Ristorante in Benowa. Very interesting menu of shared platters of various pizzas (including vegetarian) and pasta (Carbonara, Truffle Pappardelle... just to name a few. And dessert pizza, of course. Did you say Dessert Pizza? Yup. You'll have to be there. You must book: click on this link:
Bookings close tomorrow Tuesday 28th June 2022
Wesley Mission: How to prevent burn-out
Last Wednesday, Alycia Bird, from Wesley Mission, together with Amber Clode and Sam Wanjama (photo above, from right, with our meeting chairman of the day Simon Brook), gave us a presentation on how important it is to retain your mental health, particularly in difficult times. Did you know that in Australia, 1 in 6 Australians of working age experienced diagnosable mental health issues? 1 in 3 experience mental health struggles to the point of having a detrimental impact on their working ability? That some 11.2% of the Australian population received Medicare assisted mental health services in 2019-20 - up from 6.2% in 2009-10?
Obviously, the costs are huge. "Mental Health is just as important as physical health," Alycia explained. It's not just on the job performance, but also results in increased absenteeism.
So, what makes a healthy work place? One of the prime factors is communication with staff, making them aware of mental health awareness. "For every dollar spent on a program, you can expect a return of $2.30" she said.
The presentation included techniques on how to recognise the symptoms of burn-out and how to offer staff support. Just one tip of many, very effective and free of charge: BREATHE! When feeling stressful, slowly inhale deeply and exhale.even slower. Repeat. Alright: One more: Laughter!
Last but not least: Sam Wanjama informed about Marcus Mission, a Wesley Mission division dealing with training mentors to prevent Men's Suicide. (You may recall Glenn Walwork's presentation on this last year?)
Regrettably, a carefully prepared PowerPoint Alycia brought along could not be shown - the SLSC's laptop had gone walk-about... The entire presentation is up in our Download files on the right. Download it and check out all the relevant links too.
Zahra Forbutt - RYPEN camp
"Ah, today's youth...!" Haven't we all heard people whinging whenever they have forgotten what ratbags they themselves were at 15 years of age? Well, they haven't been at a Rotary meeting where a young person, freshly returned from one of our various youth camps, presents a clear and concise report of what they have experienced. Now, visualise yourself when you were 15 years old. You have honed your presentation with a PowerPoint [yes I know, but visualise anyway...] to drive the message home. Then... there is no computer to run it on! Panic? That's where one can determine the difference: Zahra was quite unfazed and delivered her speech flawlessly, clearly and without the "ummm's, aahh's" and "like" we so often hear. Obviously, she enjoyed the camp and benefited from the learning experiences and team-building exercises. Oh, by the way, she was appointed team captain too. Those kids coming from Surfers Sunrise are just special... Read her speech and watch the PowerPoint she was unable to display: it is on the Downloads section to the right.
