Last week was a Fellowship meeting, with time enough for PP and now Membership Director, Jo Kane, to give us a presentation on the journey to membership. Jo explained the steps in order and the processes that are involved in order for a person to become a member of our wonderful club. Prospective members are first invited to attend meetings and even hands-on events should they wish, to help ensure a good mutual fit in terms of the club culture, location and meeting times. There is a membership form to complete, a credibility check and a seven day board review period. A ‘Rotary conversation’ is then had with the prospective member to confirm their understanding of Rotary's core values, the Four-Way-Test, fees and participation expectations. A further 7-day notice period to all club members follows, before a person is admitted to membership. Importantly, that is only the beginning of the membership journey and the new member will be paired with a mentor and have opportunities to serve.
Guest Introductions & Welcomes
The club welcomed David Graham, an orthopaedic hand surgeon seeking potential global grant support for surgical volunteer work in Kiribati and the Solomon Islands. Craig, past president of Rotary East Perth, and Michelle, a prospective member, also attended.
Members were thanked for assisting Michael Shambrook with loading furniture for the RARE project.
Duck Race Fundraiser & Promotion
Planning continues for the fifth annual Duck Race on 21 November at Currumbin RSL, supporting Hearts of Purple and 16 community groups. With 15 sponsors secured and one major sponsor still sought for a $5,000 travel voucher, members are encouraged to promote duck sales via the club website, QR codes, and the Humanitix app. Hot Tomato has come on board as official media partner, with a media launch planned at Currumbin RSL next Thursday.
Foundation & Youth Programs
Ken Clark was recognised for surpassing US$10,000 in donations to the Rotary Foundation, achieving major donor status. The club also has a potential candidate for the National Youth Science Forum in Canberra, with an interview and sponsorship decision to follow.
International Toast – Rotary Connections Through Wine Education
Tony proposed an international toast to the Rotary Club of St Helena, Napa Valley, celebrating its 100th year. He shared the story of his school wine and tourism project at Stanthorpe High, which led to a sister-school relationship with St Helena High and ongoing student exchanges—highlighting Rotary’s power in building global education and vocational links.
