LAST WEEK'S GUEST SPEAKER

Cancer Council Queensland Presentation

Nicole, and her colleague Cody, from the Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ), gave an engaging and important presentation about the work of the CCQ. Nicole outlined that CCQ is a charity, is not government-funded, and offers far more than sunscreen. Their mission is to support all Queenslanders through research, prevention, early detection and support services. The 131120 support line connects people to counselling, peer support, wigs and headwear, accommodation, transport, and pro bono legal/financial help. Nicole highlighted that they have five lodges across Queensland, including Charles Wanstall Lodge in Brisbane, which provide fee-free accommodation and meals for patients travelling over 50 km for treatment. Cody focused on fundraising and community engagement, including Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, Daffodil Day, Relay for Life, Ponytail Project and Do It for Cancer, all reliant on volunteers.

Meeting Information - Last Week

International Toast: Rotary Club of Norfolk Island

Loraine proposed this week’s International Toast to the Rotary Club of Norfolk Island, chartered on 20 September 1973 with visitors from Australia, New Zealand, and New Caledonia. Now celebrating 53 years of service under President Ian Kiernan, the club continues to punch above its weight with strong community impact and international connections.

Guests and Community Connections

The club welcomed guests Catherine Chernovsky, considering a transfer to our club, Daryl McIntyre, and Tracy Johnson, who invited members to visit her equine-assisted therapy centre, based in the Tallebudgera Valley. Tracy’s programs support survivors of domestic violence, and there is interest in holding a future meeting at the venue.

Club Announcements and Acknowledgements

President Vicki acknowledged birthdays for Andy, Kenneth, and Philip, and encouraged members to review the email about the new District Governor role for 2028–29. Members were asked to ignore recent erroneous Club Runner refund emails. The AGM is tentatively set for 3 December, with nominations for President-elect and board roles likely to open in early November. Club Admin Director John, also recognised Kenneth for diligently coordinating all guest speakers remotely from Singapore.

We also had a guest from the Palm Beach Community Centre who attended with a small gift as a token of their appreciation of our support.

We captured a group photo at the request of our guests and as Rotarians, we were only too happy to oblige (especially with the view that our Club is blessed with).

The Buzz Box

We had another visitor for a short while too! Fortunately, it didn't create a lasting impact on the chair, but did make a few of us smile at his presence.

Club runner information

If you do not have your Club Runner login information, you can go to the Club Runner website, scroll down a little and click on “Send me a Magic Link”. Enter the email address you gave to the club, and you will receive an email. Click on the login button and then select the club website. Go to ‘My Clubrunner’ and then ‘My Profile’. The ‘Edit’ button is at the top right and you can add/change any information on your profile. Click ‘Save’ and you’re done!

If you’re really feeling techy, you can download the Club Runner app.

If you would like any help resetting your password, or downloading the app to your phone, please let us know. There are a few members who can assist you.

We are looking to use Club Runner more for information and rosters, so it would be great if everyone is able to log in.

Rotary International News and information

It is Literacy Month and the importance of literacy (and basis education) across the globe cannot be overstated.
Hans Christian Andersen once said that “the wise a man becomes, the more he will read and those who are wisest, read most”.
Oprah Winfrey said that “books were my path to personal freedom. I learned to read at age 3 and soon discovered there was a whole world to conquer that went beyond our farm in Mississippi”.
