David introduced RAWCS as a Rotary support organisation that helps clubs plan, register, fund and manage humanitarian and environmental projects—not solicit donations. Celebrating 60 years, RAWS has delivered more than A$500 million in aid and supports projects worldwide, including disaster relief, malaria elimination and initiatives for women and girls. It offers tax-deductible donation pathways through charitable funds, fundraising support, project reporting and access to grants. The Rotary Australia Compassionate Grants Program can match community-raised funds up to A$15,000 per project, while a 5% administration fee covers compliance and operational costs. David also highlighted RAWS’s project-story book and an upcoming malaria conference.
Ken opened the meeting and welcomed visitors, including former member Meredith and her daughter, Elke Graham. Guest speaker David Pearson, a geologist, was introduced ahead of his presentation.
International Toast
Ken shared highlights from a visit to the Rotary Club of Cauayan in the Philippines. That Club’s community projects included the building of teacher accommodation, books for local schools, sandals for students, and cough medicine for children. As has been the case with most of the Clubs toasted, we have received a reply from both the President and Secretary of that Club. The President noted: “it is an honour for us to be recognised and remembered by a foreigh Rotary Club…” and the Secretary wrote: “We truly appreciate this wonderful gesture of friendship and fellowship". The Secretary went further to send our Club a letter in reply and they in turn, toasted our Club also. I will share the letter by separate email.
This week, Lucy will toast her sponsor club in Argentina, but I will be looking for volunteers the week following and beyond.
Club News
The President, Vicki, congratulated members celebrating Rotary anniversaries: Gae Ferris (35 years), Margaret (20 years), and Bren (44 years). Hannah was also wished a happy birthday.
The Service Director, Mike, reported $1,944.40 in profit from the recent Bunnings barbecue and $493 from the Kieser BBQ. The next barbecue is scheduled for October 16. A possible barbecue at Pizzey Park will be raised with the board.
Members were informed that the club is also supporting an Interact Club badge presentation at Miami High School, with new clubs planned at TSS and Benowa State High School.
Great Duck Race
The Great Duck Race is planned for November 21. The committee is seeking sponsorship to address an estimated $2,000 budget gap and encouraged members to sign up for sales shifts at local venues. The event will include community duck races and a stand-up paddleboard race.
