LAST WEEK'S GUEST SPEAKER

Rebecca Moraitis from Odyssey spoke with us about the Lifestyle Community model founded by Phil Usher. The concept behind Odyssey is such that residents “move once” and avoid traditional nursing homes. Residents purchase purpose-built, accessible apartments and can receive 24/7 care, including dementia and palliative care, in their own home. Communities (Robina, Chevron Island, upcoming Hope Island and Burleigh Waters) feature a licensed restaurant, activities program, concierge, pets, and on-site medical and allied health services. Fees are largely at cost, with a fixed-for-life weekly services charge and a deferred management fee on exit. Short-term “staycation” respite stays are also offered as a try-before-you-buy option.

Other Meeting Information - Last Week

Club Visitors & Guests

Members welcomed Danish visitors, Christian, Ann, Oskar, Mia and Caroline. Oskar attended the same high school in Denmark that our club member John Campbell attended in 1992 as a Rotary Youth Exchange Student. Last year, John and Vicki were guest speakers at the school and have since welcomed Oskar to the Gold Coast a few times, including this time, with his family.

Speaking of exchange students, our very own exchange student Luci, shared that she has started netball and has moved to a new host family connected to the club.

Future Rotarian Frank Dolan was once again a welcomed guest at last week’s meeting.

Community Service Updates

A small team of members visited with homeless community members over coffee, supporting two men recovering from serious car accidents with no insurance, now cared for by the Uniting Church.

An update on Kokoda parking reported $3,777.06 raised. Plans are underway to send 50 boxes of books from Benowa High School and other donations to Brisbane, with volunteers needed to help load a truck mid-week.

Special Induction – Welcome Gae Ferris

A highlight of the meeting was the formal induction of Gae Ferris into the Rotary Club of Burleigh Heads. Gae transfers from the Rotary Club of Lismore Networking, bringing 30 years of Rotary service, including roles as club president, treasurer, secretary, assistant governor, regional community leader and Paul Harris Fellow. Jo shared a heartfelt tribute to her mum’s lifelong commitment to “service above self” through projects in Fiji, local flood recovery, and countless fundraising events. Gae thanked members for their warm welcome and said she already feels part of the Burleigh family and looks forward to many happy times and continued service.

Rosies - Friends on the Street
The Outreach at Burleigh operates each Tuesday and Thursday from 7pm - 9pm at Burleigh Heads just outside the library at the side of the Bowls Club; Our vans head out with our volunteers and students from our local High Schools to engage with the patrons, some of whom are regular attendees and others who come and go as they need or are able to make their way to us.
Rosies aims to offer friendship and unconditional acceptance to those who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or are experiencing social isolation or loneliness. Just as you would offer a cup of tea or coffee to a friend who was visiting your home, we do the same for our friends on the street.
We also, through community gifting/funding offer blankets, sleeping bags, beanies, socks, grocery and personal care items.

Many of the individuals that come to visit us on outreach have housing or jobs but are still having trouble making ends meet or simply lack a strong support system. At Rosies we welcome all of our friends with open arms and friendly smiles, you’d be amazed what a cuppa and a chat can do to change someone’s self-worth and build confidence.
