Fortis is currently exploring opportunities for micro-grids, batteries and energy efficiency options. These initiatives help provide additional power to the grid.  There was great discussion regarding installation of solar panels and how they allow customers to optimize power use to reduce energy costs.  The electric vehicle smart charge pilot allows the utility to manage charging based on optimizing demand on the grid, making more efficient use of the available resources. 

Members made good use of the question period to gather information regarding solar energy, battery storage, and the ramifications of Red Deer transitioning from a departmental structure to a Municipally Controlled Corporation to improve responsiveness, efficiency, and sustainability. These were topics of high interest as many members stayed at the end of the meeting to ask for further information.
