Brent Ramsay, County of Red Deer Mayor outlined the areas of focus for the upcoming year. Collaboration and partnerships will be key as the County is unique in that the population is a mix of rural agriculture and residential properties. The recently elected council bring many new perspectives to tackling issues. Strategic priorities for council include reducing the red tape by streamlining processes to get permits and by reducing the amount of requests that require going to the municipal planning commission. They are engaging more with the construction industry and seeking feedback as they try to align the processes required by the county to industry needs while supporting responsible growth. Regional partnership are important as the county is bordered by 7 urban and 5 rural counties. Monthly joint council meetings with the City of Red Deer are held to ensure good communication and sharing of priorities and development. Economic development is focused on ensuring there is regular collaboration and communication between parties, focusing on local industry opportunities and the possibility of opportunities to develop as a destination. Gasoline Alley has seen the recent opening of the Pickleplex, a medical clinic, pharmacy, and daycare and it is expected that CAMIS soon will be open. The new airport road gives a 2nd access point and opens up space for diverse economic initiatives. Junction 42 now has a new roundabout and an expansion of truck parking spaces. The area of Springbrook South and the site of the under construction Springbrook flour milling facility, is progressing well. Residential growth is up with over 95.2 million in housing starts and 150 new homes being constructed. The county is able to maintain the mill rate but there will be a tax increase due to an increase in the education and policing tax from the provincial government. Members requested information regarding our legacy project- the Wetlands at Slack Slough. Red tape and waiting for approvals was lengthy when trying to complete the first phase of the project and are concerning to the club. Plans to move to the next stage of development are not progressing. Mayor Ramsay will arrange for a meeting with council to provide updates and clarify any information required from recent communications. Bruce Buruma presented the Mayor with a donation that the club has made to Shelter Box.

Rotary Branches Out is one way that this club connects with youth in our area and provides an opportunity for them to be environmental stewards. Mark Saturday, June 6 on your calendars. Come and help plant saplings at McKenzie Trails. This is a great family oriented activity so please share with friends, family, and colleagues. All are welcome! 
The Rotary Club has a long association with the Rotary Club of Red Deer. We have been a key partner, having helped to establish Camp Alexo in 1984 and selecting them as the major charity of choice for our recent Black Tie Bingo. Help them celebrate 50 years of mentoring and supporting youth in Red Deer.
