Community Service Presentations
Holly G welcomed Zainub and representatives from the Afro Caribbean summer festival. The festival was an opportunity to showcase and celebrate diversity. Dylan Rambow introduced Erin Wilmer (Crisis Support Program Manager) and Patricia from the Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre to share info about the 24 hour crisis line that is available to support those experiencing trauma. It is available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day and fields calls from Alberta, Canada, and the US. The dedicated crisis support line received over 20 000 calls in 2022 from victims of sexual or domestic violence, child abduction, human trafficking, mental health concerns or requiring general supports. The support from Rotary has enabled them to develop a specialized team to deal with complex cases. Additional training is provided to those team members.
Youth HQ representative John Johnston was welcomed by Jack P. The newly created Centre for Social Impact is housed in the Professional Building on Ross Street. It provides a space where charities and non profit agencies can work together to support the community. Support from Rotary is going to be used to help develop a training centre that will be available for organizations to hold workshops. Meeting space and IT support will be available at a nominal cost for charities and organizations. Over $21 000 of the fundraising goal of $31 000 has been raised. John thanked Rotary for their continual support of Youth HQ and community agencies over the year.
Weekly Meeting Update
Darcy opened the meeting with a warm welcome on a chilly day. Robert M arrived in the nick of time to lead all in our national anthem. Adele shared witty insights about travel destinations.
