Literacy Alive Project Update
Lynne Paradis and the Belize Literacy Alive team provided an update on the project after the recent February visit. Robert Mast and his wife Janice Gerdts joined as Rotary Ambassadors.
School closures and Covid helped to contribute to a reading crisis as students exhibited significant reading gaps. With the support of the Ministry of Education, Belize teachers were able to share in a Canadian developed Reading Intervention Program. The focus was on Standard 2 and 3 (similar to our Grade 3 and 4). Teachers in all government schools implemented the program in an effort to provide students with needed interventions. Preliminary results showed significant gains in student reading scores over a short period of time. More data will be collected in May and it is expected that this trend will continue. Results and feedback will be interpreted and used to determine the next steps. It is very exciting to see the progress that students have made using this teaching strategy. Interest has also been expressed by Rotary International as this project demonstrates measurable results and is focused on a long term commitment to shared goals by all parties.
Robert shared his observations about the project. During the week, Robert and Janice were part of the team that was collecting information in schools and libraries , gathering feedback about what was successful and how the program was being used.. Robert and Janice commented on the warm welcome the team received, reflective of the close relationships that have been built up over the years. He also noted the extensive work that was done to ensure close communication was maintained and honored with government and educational leaders. The San Ignacio Rotary Club was warm and welcoming and very supportive of the project and all initiatives. Robert and Janice were pleased to be part of a team that is truly Rotary in Action- a long term project that has achieved significant measurable results and works alongside members of the community to meet their needs.
