Community & Project Updates
Gloria Beck extended thanks to members of government for their support in this first stage of the Rotary Wetland Legacy Project. Our goal was to protect Slack Slough and surrounding lands in perpetuity to ensure that they can be enjoyed by many for years to come. This was made possible with the support of the County of Red Deer, and provincial and federal government members.
Mayor Jim Woods , County of Red Deer, and his staff were invaluable in this process. They were always willing to meet and work together to ensure that this project would come to fruition.
The provincial government granted permission for access to the land adjoining Slack Slough at the entrance to the project. This area now contains a striking sign and a viewing point that includes 3 commemorative benches on the land for the public's use. Don Odell was instrumental in the memorial bench project. Devin Dreeshen, MLA Innisfail-Sylvan Lake, was thanked for his government's support.
A strong supporter of the environment, Earl Dreeshen, MP Red Deer-Mountainview, was commended for his commitment. The birds at the wetlands are protected under the Migratory Birds Convention Act and many birders visit the area frequently. Protection of the environment is a strong focus for our government and Rotary.
In future phases we hope to continue to enhance this area in the future by developing trails and replacing the viewing platform that was once there. The development of the area as a learning centre will be our ultimate target and will be done with the cooperation of the many levels of government that have already supported the project.

In recognition of her support and work done as a member of the Legacy Land Trust a Paul Harris Fellowship was awarded to Kim Good. Kim was instrumental throughout the project in helping the team accomplish its goals.
