People of Action Lockup - Stacked

Foundation Month
Gerry Winia challenged all to make the Rotary Foundation one of their charities of choice.  The Foundation was established in 1917 and has grown to be a 4 star charity  as rated by Charity Navigator.  Through the foundation, many have benefited from scholarships, community grants, being an Ambassador Scholar, part of a Group Study Exchange or Vocational Training Team. The club has contributed $70 000 to the Foundation (2021) and has received $47 000 for District Grants projects and $141 500 for Global Grant projects.  We are a club of action and use the money awarded for so many projects both locally and internationally.
There are 3 club goals:
  1.  Become a 100% sustaining member club by having all members contribute $100 US each year.
  2. Each member to be Paul Harris Fellow within 5 years of joining the club
  3. Continue dollar amounts contributed with points (eg contribute $500 US to be matched by club points to receive Paul Harris Recognition)
Members can contribute in 3 ways
  1. Automate giving by enrolling in Rotary Direct through MyRotary
  2. Donate online at rotary.org/donate
  3. Provide a cheque to Foundation Chair, Gerry Winia
  4. Mail your gift directly to Rotary Foundation.

Steve Chow:  Welcome back after another cruise adventure
Darcy: Congrats to the Beers for Belize group,  Bill Hull, Ross Fletcher, and Judith McIntyre, who worked together to put together the craft beer offerings at the Black Tie Bingo. Victor: Sadly reporting the vandalism of the trishaws at Sentinel Storage.  There was significant damage to one of the trishaws.

Vocationals

Zainab Mohamoud

Zainab comes from northern Somalia and was raised in a very large family of 14.  From an early age her father encouraged his children to acquire a good education.  Many of her siblings obtained further training in a variety of occupations and professions.  It was also very common for girls to marry before completing their education.  Zainab began her adventure in Canada in 1997 in Toronto, learning English and working in a bakery.  Her move to Alberta in 2007 saw her open a day home and acquiring a social work diploma. Zainab focused her efforts on raising funds to build a school in Somalia and achieved this goal in 2015.  Further funds were used to ensure teachers received a salary.  She continued her education and achieved a social work degree in 2017.  Zainab helped to found the Afro Caribbean Centre of Central Alberta which held its first cultural event recently for over 200 participants.  This organization has recently expanded into office space and has recently received a large grant to further its goals.  Zainab invites all to attend the January 18/24 showing of the movie The Color Purple.  She joined Rotary in 2014 and looks forward to continuing to serve others in her community.
