Vocational Talk
Rodney Bosnick provided insight into why Rotary was a good choice for him after retirement. Before joining, he talked to Harvey M and learned more about the philosophy and values of Rotary to ensure that they resonated with his personal values. Rodney was attracted by the opportunities that Rotary provides to be involved in the community and leave the world a better place. He referred to an Indian proverb, “Blessed is he who plants trees under whose shade he will never sit", explaining that this resonated with Rotary's focus on creating long lasting change, often beyond the lifetime of participants. Rodney's experiences as a canoeist, lifeguard, camp counsellor, and parent tie in well with a focus on youth being important as we adapt to the changing world.
Rodney's educational background in ecology and engineering, along with many years of work experience in ensuring that companies innovate for safer and greener products and processes, and work to continuously improve their environmental, health and safety performance support Rotary's focus on the environment.
Rodney is going to be a true asset to our club as he brings many gifts and talents. Welcome to the Rotary Club of Red Deer!
Community & Project Updates
Literacy Alive!
Judith, Cheryl and Lynne, along with 4 other team members, recently returned from a trip to Belize in which they continued supporting the learning of teachers and librarians. It was a great trip and was highlighted by the collaborative Professional Development sessions that were jointly developed and led by Canadian and Belizean educators. During the course of 2 weeks, every Standard 1 teacher in the country was provided with an opportunity for future learning. Truly an example of Rotary in Action!
Rotary Youth Exchange
Charlotte: Updates from Germany
We were treated by a Zoom visit from Charlotte, our outward Rotary Exchange student currently in Germany. She reported that she has been in school for nearly a month and notes that German schooling is taken more seriously than here in Canada. Charlotte is enrolled in Grade 11 and is taking 10 subjects for the year. Her class is composed of 25 students, all taking the same courses. What a great way to develop friendships and relationships. She is heading off on a class trip, the focus of which is an internship focusing on career planning. With her host family she has traveled to Bavaria, Munich, and Salzburg, enjoying all that she has seen and experienced. We look forward to her updates. Her parents, Nolan and ??? Skogen attended the meeting and welcomed the chance to have a quick interaction.
He will be coming soon! Inward bound student- Koldo
Corinne reports that the visa issues that were delaying his arrival have been overcome. We look forward to his arrival later this week. We will be able to meet him at next week's meeting.
Rob and Hettyann Stryker will be the first family to host Koldo. The Mykytshyn's will be the next host. We are still requiring another host family - please contact Darcy or Corinna for more information.
If I Could Save Time in a Bottle
Well, we did once and will do so again. After the unfortunate excavation by the City of Red Deer of our original time capsule that was buried 25 years ago, we are ready to try this again! Please contact Robert Lampard if you have any items that you feel would be appropriate for inclusion.
