Meeting Update

Incoming President Scott Robinson hosted the meeting with Adele Poratto as Sarge.

Scott thanked all who were able to volunteer at the Red Deer Airshow on the weekend.  It was a great way to give back to the community.

Grant Edmonds was welcomed back after an absence.  Thoughts and prayers are extended to him and wife Carole.

Adele reminded all of the importance of volunteers and the role that they play in their communities.  While many join Rotary for the purpose of  networking or making business connections, the opportunities for giving back to their community are equally important.  We are united under the banner of service.  Adele had members stand when their area of service was called- no one was left sitting. We are a busy club!

Visiting Rotarians

John Binder shared the sad news that long time member Bill Olafson has passed away. Bill was a dedicated member of Rotary for over 32 years and was a strong supporter of the community in which he lived.  He was a key supporter of Camp Alexo.  He will be missed greatly by his friends, family, and the community.  Services will be held on August 13 at 2 p.m. at the Harvest Centre at Westerner Park.

This photo was taken at the recent Youth HQ Anniversary celebration.

Membership News

Vocational Talk with Brian Blanchard

We were privileged to hear from one of our newer members, Brian Blanchard.  Brian was sponsored by Jerry Pasman.

Brian grew up in the Bonnyville area and always took pride in whatever job he had. He felt it important to take a vested interest in what he did, showing integrity and how he valued the learning opportunity.  Brian spoke of the importance of having a positive mindset, no matter what the job was, and being proud of what was accomplished.  He was fortunate that a mentor saw the potential in him, and was willing to help to provide an opportunity for Brian to begin training in the area of business management.  This provided him with skills and attitudes that have stood him in good stead over the years.

Brian is a Licensed Insolvency Trustee, managing a full service company that supports those seeking financial freedom.  He views his role as helping to solve problems for others by creating solutions  filled with hope for a more positive future. Brian feels that the principles of his practice reflect the Rotary 4 Way test.  Both focus on making decisions that are fair to all participants, and require public confidence that all are treated with respect.

Brian has 2 daughters that enjoy activities in which they can serve others  He enjoys old cars, bikes and opportunities to connect with others.  We are pleased to have you join Rotary, Brian, as you clearly demonstrate your commitment to Service Above Self.

Rotarian of the Month

This award will be presented at our August 10 meeting.

Community & Project Updates

Black Tie Bingo
Leigh Sands, Black Tie Bingo chair, provided information about our club's biggest fundraiser being held Thursday, October 29, 2026 at the Red Deer Resort and Casino ballroom. Planning is ongoing Due to changes in  fundraising priorities by past sponsors have resulted in opportunities for new sponsors to come aboard. The committee is also looking for new ideas for live and silent auction items.
The charity of choice for this year is the Red Deer Cardiac Catherization Lab. “Save the Date” posters and digital information will be available shortly for members to share.  Ticket sales will also begin soon.  Monies raised last year ($120 000 net) permitted the club to contribute over $99 000 to community projects.  This fundraiser, now celebrating 31 years, raised $15 000 in its first year- we have come a long way!!!

There will be many opportunities for members to be part of this event. Watch for more info about how you can be part of it.

Darcy Mykytyshyn, club member and DG, reminded members of the impact this event has made in our community over the years.  Fundraisers are an opportunity for people to give to people- use your network connections within your community to help us  raise funds to help others.

Red Deer Air Show
This was a great opportunity to give back to the community.  Many members worked the Show Line and were privileged to be right up for all the action!

Literacy Alive.
Harold Barnes: Reminisced about his time as a Walmart greeter and the beginning of school. Harold has always been a big supporter of Literacy Alive!, this club's international project.  He presented a cheque to be used for the Building Literacy: 1 Tile at a Time project.   Judith McIntyre accepted the contribution on behalf of the Literacy Alive team and remarked that  support such as this helps ensure that learning continues in Belizean classrooms.  Look for more information to come about how you can be involved.
