Dr. Lynne Paradis- Belize Literacy Project. 

 

Lynne shared updates regarding how this international project is moving forward. The government of Belize is committed to improving education and is an active participant in the project. This partnership is the result of connections established over the past 18 years. The Ministry of Education  have taken a leadership role and have mandated that the educational approach we have introduced be used in all government schools in Standard 2 and 3 classrooms.  This commitment is admirable and should result in positive results for Belizean schools literacy programming. 

 

The Belize Literacy Steering Committee has been meeting on a regular basis via Zoom to determine future plans. Belizeans play an active role as we work together to determine how best to meet their needs and provide support.  The team will be in Belize in February to monitor progress , collect mid year data, and to meet with scholarship recipients.  Rotarians will also be joining the team to connect with the local San Ignacio club and establish connections.

 

It is exciting to note that Rotary International has taken an interest in the project and that the head of world RI Literacy is now a member of the steering committee for the project. This interest has resulted in the exploration of considering an application for a Project of Scale grant.  The project has demonstrated results that are measurable and have resulted in country wide positive changes to literacy practices.

 

Lynne also shared information on the ways in which we are expanding our knowledge using brain research on how students acquire literacy and the importance of establishing a solid foundation in phonetic skills.  The importance of a strong oral vocabulary should not be discounted. 

 

We look forward to more updates from the project in the Spring.

 

The annual event was enjoyed by over 70 people. The centre was decorated with seasonal decor, the music was playing, the food was delightful.  And best of all, the company was superb!
