We welcomed Erin Forbes, Executive Director, from Dress For Success (Red Deer) This non profit organization offers long lasting solutions that enable women to break the cycle of poverty and create economic independence. Over 1.3 million women worldwide  have benefited its support.  

From a small base in 2008, through fire and Covid, this organization continued to evolve into the successful non profit it is today.   Located in Capstone it has developed into a true community resource that focuses and responds to the identified local needs. It relies on a large volunteer base and has established valued  connections with local businesses. The majority of clients are over 31,many mothers with over 2 children, or new Canadians.  Each client is unique and receives support that allow them to reenter the workforce with skills and attitudes that journey to their personal success- a good job, financial independence, and confidence in themselves.  This can include participating in leadership programs, being supported with professional clothing for the workplace, and help with career programs and professional development. Dress For Success provides women with dignity, shows them possibiities and view them as capable and confident.  

It was interesting to learn that over 70% of clients are over 31, Red Deer's unemployment rate is among the highest in Canada, and that our area contains among  the highest percentages of 1 income families in Alberta. The gap between minimum wage and what is considered to be a living wage is approximately $5.  Many women are working in jobs for which they are overqualified, receive lower wages and hours.  

March 2026 saw the launch of the Career Hub, supported by the Donald Family Fund, provides wrap around supports in the area of mental health and financial guidance.  It contains job search tools, confidence building resources and ongoing support. The recent partnership with Red Deer Polytechnic is an exciting collaborative opportunity.

Support for Dress For Success can include becoming a volunteer with clients, at events or working behind the scenes. Clothing donations are always welcomed. The purchase of an Empowerment Pin, available at many local businesses, also shows your support.
