Board Update

August 2024

The Flash, Board Edition

As we enter a new Rotary year and acknowledge the extremely positive feedback that has been received since bringing back The Flash we would like to publish a Board Edition each month after our meetings.  The premise is that this be a key communication tool for the President to use in updating the club on board business.  We are getting it started this month and welcome any feedback you have to offer.  Happy Reading.

Darcy and Phil.

Decisions:

  1. Approve the Sponsorship Contract for the Pidherney Centre, which will expire June 30, 2029.  In addition to our weekly meetings, the contract includes provisions for the use of the Pidherney board room for anyone needing a space for a Rotary Meeting.  If your Rotary Committee would like to take advantage of this space, please reach out to Rotarian Rob Stryker.

Presentations:

Thanks to Communication Chair, Dylan von Rambow, for his presentation outlining the Four-Pillar communication strategy that will be championed this Rotary year.  The four pillars include:

  1. Show what the Rotary Club of Red Deer Does (#PeopleofAction).  We need to show the public WHY being a Rotarian matters in today’s world.
  2. Regular Social Media Use. Today’s online environment requires regular content to demonstrate currency and relevance.
  3. Website Overhaul.  Our website needs to be easier for non-Rotarians to navigate.  Ease of use is key.
  4. Create a regular content calendar and production.  We are moving away from a single person doing everything in the belief that “more hands make for less work.” We now have a team of Rotarians who will manage a real-time communication calendar promoting our club.

If you have feedback, suggestions, or ideas, please send them to communications@rotaryclubofreddeer.ca Watch for more details in the weeks and months ahead.

Director Updates:

  • Rebel’s 5050 AGLC License for the 2024/25 season has been approved.  Brett is working on the schedule and it will be published shortly.  The first Pre-Season game is Sept 7, 2024
  • A Club Fundraising Committee has been created.  The purpose of the committee will be to identify potential fundraising events to recommend to the Board and develop policy and procedures for future committees.  Members of the committee include Phil Hyde (Chair), Ray McBeth, Vangi Willington, Dean Williams, David Allin, and Dustin Snider.  If you are interested in being a part of this committee and currently don't have a committee assignment, please contact fundraising@rotaryclubofreddeer.ca as Phil is still looking for 2 or 3 more members
  • Club Service Week is Sept 9th to 14th.  This will be the 3rd installment of Club Service Week with Kinsmen, Kiwanis, Lions, Optimists, and Rotary.  Our club will be making a $1500 contribution to Red Deer Humane Society and all members are asked to consider volunteering for one of the many Service Projects at https://signup.com/go/evxMqPr.  If you have any questions on this, please reach out to Vanji at service@rotaryclubofreddeer.ca
  • 2023/24 Financial Statements have been completed and will now be going to the Financial Statement Review Committee so that they can be presented to the Club at our AGM on Sept 23, 2024.  Thanks to Ron and the Financial Statement Review Committee for their efforts.
  • The Club Succession Committee has met to discuss enhancements to the club's succession strategy.  A full report, with recommendations, will be made to the board by the end of October.  Feel free to share thoughts and ideas with any members of the committee, comprised of Darcy Mykytyshyn (Chair), Dick McDonnell, Merv Thurmeier, Jim MacPherson, Dean Williams, and Shelley Ralston.
  • A committee entitled Calgary 2025 in Red Deer has been created to explore opportunities to attract Rotarians from around the world to visit Central Alberta for three or four days on a post-conference tour after the RI Conference.  Members of the committee include Darcy Mykytyshyn (Chair), Lis Mackey, Scott Robinson, Jack Panteluk, Dean Williams as well Judy-Ann Wybenga (Rotary Sunrise), and a rep from Rotary East.  Share ideas and suggestions with any member of the committee.
  • Calgary 2025 Club Liaison.  As few months ago our club was asked to identify a liaison that would be our connection to the RI Conference.  Thanks to Past President Jack Panteluk who recently attended the 2024 Singapore conference for stepping forward to assume this role.  We are looking forward to regular information on how our club, and members, can be involved in this global event.
  • Weekly Meeting Schedule.  To make it easier for Club members to RSVP for our weekly meetings please check out our Website.  On the right-hand side, you will find four-six week's worth of meetings that can be RSVP’d to.  The goal is to make it easier for you to provide your RSVP so that we can ensure strong management of our meeting costs.  Thanks for your ongoing assistance in helping us manage this body of work.
  • Beers for Belize is back.  Start building you’re your Christmas list for this successful fundraiser supporting the amazing work our Literacy Alive team.
  • Calgary 2025 Host Organizing Committee has invited Darcy Mykytyshyn to serve as the Co-Chair, Promotions and Marketing with Miriam Mitchell-Banks from Calgary Centennial.  Work on this conference has been happening for a few years.  Now that Singapore is over, activity is ramping up.  If you have feedback or suggestions with respect to any element of the conference, feel free to share your thoughts at darcy.mykytyshyn@rotarycalgary2025.org

Hope you have enjoyed getting caught up on the work of your board.  If you have any suggestions or feedback, please send your comments to either or Phil or Darcy.
