Adriana LaGrange, Provincial Minister of Health and Wellness
Adriana provided information on major provincial projects in Red Deer. and area. These include the $40 million G.H. Dawe Centre renovation and expansion, opening of the Red Deer Recovery community in north Red Deer which has spaces for 75 clients, continuing work on the Justice Centre, renovations to Hunting Hill High School, and the opening of Fr Lorenzo Ruiz Middle School in Kentwood. The renaming of the Child Advocacy Centre to Sheldon Kennedy Centre of Excellence was also celebrated.
An update on the status of the upgrades to the Red Deer Regional Hospital which will hopefully be completed by 2031 was greeted with much interest. These initial upgrades include the expansion of the parkade and the building of two towers which will house the ambulatory unit and in-patient care. Expansion of other areas will also be undertaken but will be done in the later stages as they involve current patient care areas and require reorganization of current areas. It is expected that when complete, the hospital will increase from 370 beds to 570 bed capacity.
Many were interested in the plans for the Hazlett Commercial land (close to the junction of Hwy11A and Hwy 2) which involves the proposed construction of a commercial mall which may result in the creation of 3000 jobs. This is will be developed by a private investor and is awaiting annexation approval.
The long awaited announcement for a permanent site for the homeless shelter in Red Deer is still awaited with baited breath.
Adriana celebrated the people of Red Deer as they come together to support their community. She was thanked by Jim McPherson for her dedication to serving the province and Red Deer.
