Guest Speaker Kurt Kowalchuk, District Governor, presenting Paul Harris Fellowship to Daria
Kurt shared the story of how he came to Rotary. He had traveled to Bhutan and Nepal and realized the need for support for many local issues and sought ways to become involved in an ongoing, sustainable way. He was drawn to Rotary because of its international focus on projects that build upon the needs of locals, opportunities to attend conferences to meet like minded individual, the multitude of fellowship events and opportunities, and the focus on service. Kurt discussed how the service opportunities are focused on creating sustainable long lasting changes to people's lives. He reflected that the projects that he has been involved with over the years have touched more than 10 000 lives.
The Rotary International theme for 2023-24 is Create Hope in the World. Kurt encouraged us to start with ourselves by creating a hopeful positive presence in our interactions with others. He celebrated the efforts of this club that reflect the theme.
Membership at the District level remains strong as clubs look for new opportunities to attract and maintain members. The Foundation committee has created a new website and is offering training seminars. Kurt encouraged all to become involved in 3 key district events: Move for Polio which is ongoing, Day of Service 3 K walk in spring, and the District Conference in Drumheller May 4 and 5.
On behalf of the District, Daria was presented with a Paul Davis Fellowship in recognition for her dedication to Rotary. She has sponsored many new members, has raised the public profile of Rotary, and was recognized as Rotarian of the Month. Congratulations!

Happy/Sad and other Fun Things
Dagmar: Shared info re 10Peaks Innovation Xchange Breakfast. This breakfast is a kick-off to the 3rd annual 10Peaks student conference on energy, our environment and climate, breakfast attendees will have the opportunity to celebrate students including Ten Peaks Case Competition winners, the Tan Brothers, and the Robotics team from St. Joseph High School in Red Deer. Keynote speaker Leanne Kubiseski, Senior Advisor of Emerging Customer Solutions at FortisAlberta will address the breakfast participants: Preparing the Future Grid.
Tickets are $40/person, including GST through the, Red Deer Polytechnic ticket centre.

Stuart Cullum in his vocational talk shared that he grew up near Three Hills and was active in the farming community and rodeo. Formal education included B.Ed from U of L, and M.Ed from U of A. He also dabbled in building grain bins, tree planting, farming, running a poultry cow/calf business as he learned the value of hard work. After a short stint as a teacher Stuart pursued his interest in entrepreneurship and innovative research opportunities with a variety of organizations and academic institutions. As the president of Red Deer Polytechnic he is passionate about the ways in which colleges can support industry with innovative strategies. Stuart shared the importance of creating lasting relationships with others and maintaining those positive connections. Rotary is grateful that you have chosen to share your skills and talents as you serve others, build fellowship and creating lasting change.
