Vocational Speaker:  Deena Kordt
Deena describes herself as a country girl with a rock and roll heart. She is originally from Saskatchewan and continues to maintain the values she grew up with up, especially taking care of your neighbor and ensuring that you support those in need.  Deena gave a passionate call to action to become more aware of the struggles that friends and neighbors may be experiencing and require support. She shared personal stories regarding domestic abuse and the impact that it has upon on the lives of so many. Deena encourages all to reach out and be a supportive listener, friend and advocate. She is currently the owner/publisher of Divorce Magazine Canada and also maintains a blog and a strong social media presence.  Deena was sponsored by Daria.  We welcome you to the club and look forward to working with you in the future on projects.

Community & Project Updates

Service Collaboration Week- September 11-15
Bruce B shared details regarding the 2nd annual week in which service clubs in Red Deer will join together in service. Members of the Kinsmen, Kiwanis, Rotary, Optomist and Lions clubs will be participating in the kick off event on September 7 at 2 p.m. at the Red Deer Sexual Assault Centre. The media will be present as we assist the Centre in moving to their new location at the Child Advocacy Centre.
The Red Deer Sexual Assault Centre will be the organization that Rotary will focus upon.  Other organizations such as the Lending Cupboard, Youth HQ, and the Salvation Army Camp will also benefit from the support from local service clubs.   Please watch for further information from Bruce B regarding how we can all play a part in supporting our community.

Rotary Employment Partnerships
Partnerships are between businesses and individuals that create inclusive employment opportunities.   Gina B updated the club on 2 new placements that will be beginning in the upcoming month.  Red Deer Polytechnic is supporting one individual to be part of the Athletic Division as a game attendant.  Lululemon has added another individual to their team and now has 2 individuals that are being supported due to the partnership opportunity.
Gina is looking for leads to a partnership opportunity for some young men who are looking for employment.  Warehouse positions such as those in the shipping industry that involve loading, receiving, packing of materials would be ideal.  These young men have already demonstrated success in previous positions.   Please contact Gina for more information.

Tri Shaws
After a successful time at Rivera, they are moving to Deer Park Village.  Adele reports that the experience having them located at a seniors facility has resulted in great use and enthusiasm. Thanks to Victor and the other members of the team for ensuring that many can experience the joy of travelling on Red Deer’s trail system. It is anticipated that based on this year’s success with taking the Tri Shaws to the people that the season will be start earlier next year, enabling more seniors to partake in this activity.  The AGM for the Society will be held in October and new members to the board are always welcome.
