Darcy chaired the meeting with Patricia acting as Sarge. Patricia reminded us of the Participaction Challenge that is happening during the month of June and importance of moving- in any shape or form!

We were treated to the vocals of our outgoing student, Charlotte, as she led us in the singing of our national anthem.

 

Randy Smith, District Governor Nominee, was introduced by Darcy.  Randy's term will be 2025-26.  Randy spoke of the great success of the recent Singapore conference and the plans for the 2025 conference to be held in Calgary. There will be many opportunities to be involved- watch for emails.

 

The winning number for the 50/50 draw belonged to Leann and she very enthusiastically did her best to draw the winning card but to no avail.

Gloria: Enjoyed the visit with her Swedish relatives that she has maintained contact with for many years.

Phil H: Thoroughly enjoyed his recent 10 inside passage cruise with his brother and sister.

Victor: Returned from recent road trip across Alberta, BC, and Washington to visit nieces and nephews.

Thelma Maris shared her vocational talk with members.  She was recently a member of the Rotary Club of Red Deer and a Rotarian for over 26 years.  Thelma revealed that she has an artistic side and is known for her tole painting and has had some of her work featured in exhibitions.  While living in Edson, Thelma, along with Victor, began to look for ways in which they could give back to their community.  The result was the beginning of the Rotary Club of Edson in 1997.  With the assistance of the Hinton Rotary Club the club began to flourish.  Victor and Thelma agreed that they would sit at different tables and never hold positions on the board at the same time! Thelma served as President twice.  Through Rotary, Thelma has had great adventures and travelled.  She encourages all to contribute to the Foundation as the money is used wisely to support projects around the world. 

We welcome you Thelma and look forward to continuing to draw upon your knowledge of Rotary.

 

 

The Rotary Career Opportunity Fund orginated in 1996 and is now funded exclusively on income from investments. The Fund is held by the Red Deer Community Foundation. Students are selected each spring by a committee composed of Rotary members, the Executive director of the Red Deer Community Foundation, and counsellors from the high schools.  The purpose of the fund is to assist above average students in achieving their career goals where students have limited financial resources.  Criteria also includes school and community involvement and acceptance into an Alberta post-secondary program in the current year.

 

This year 15 students from Red Deer High Schools are each a recipient of $3000.00.  Since 1996, the Fund has disbursed

$ 640,000 to local students.

The 2025 Rotary International Conference will be in Calgary next year.  It is so exciting.  The following is a clip from a recent bulletin about the conference and how plans are progressing.

Some “preliminary” numbers are in from RI. They are extremely happy with the results, and so are we. During the Calgary Promo Rate Period (with some forms still to process):
Paid registrations: 7,281
Unpaid registrations: 3,811
Total: 11,092
For comparison, the Singapore Promo Rate Period (in Melbourne, with all forms included):
Paid registrations: 5,677
Unpaid registrations: 2,348
Total: 8,025

So far, that is an increase of 3,087 over last year and the highest post Covid registration they have seen.

We are overwhelmed by the response of Calgary 2025 volunteers - from both within and outside the City of Calgary. The excitement and participation from D5360 Rotarians from across our district, from D5370, and as far as Ontario has reiterated our commitment to ensure Rotarians and Rotary clubs across Canada will participate in and benefit from our convention.
