Meeting Update

Amanda O chaired the Valentine Day meeting. Jan Carr was the Sarge for the day. 
 
The meeting space was decorated for the day with flowers, candy, and hearts.  Roses were shared with the women in attendance.  Thanks to the Social Committee for the special touches.

Dick M continued his streak of winning the opportunity to take home the 50/50 pot.  He also continued to not be successful in this endeavour.  Better luck next week Dick!
 

Happy/Sad and other Fun Things

Diane M: Loved her escape in Cancun with Lynn Wilson. The plan for each day was eat, drink, read, sleep and repeat!
Darcy: Spent 4 days skiing in Kimberley.  Claims to have achieved top speed of 175 km descending the hill- unfortunately in a prone position on his skis!
Steve C: Happy Chinese New Year! We celebrate the year of the dragon.
Leann: Thanks all for the thoughts, prayers, messages and actions as she bid goodbye to her father. 
Leigh: Confessed to forgetting her 15th Wedding Anniversary.
Phil P:  Kudos to the Wetlands Committee in ensuring Slack Slough will be preserved forever.  Reflected that while the city may expand in the future, the wetlands will be forever there..   Celebrated his oldest grandaughters being flag bearers at a recent Queens hockey game at which he was a ref. This date also marked the 50th anniversary of Phil receiving  ahockey trophy in Hull. 
Zainub: Shared info re fundraiser for African immigrants impacted by layoffs in the community.  Check out the accoca centre website for more details.
 
Dick M: Highlighted the article in the Rotary magazine re a school in California and role in restoring vintage cars.  If you are done reading your copy, please let Dick know so he can bring it to share with his other vintage car afficionados
Amanda O: Excited to announce the birth of a new nephew.
Robert M: Heading off to Belize with the Literacy Alive team on Friday.  Will also be celebrating his 70th birthday while away.
 

Membership News

Scott Robinson and  Laura Snape shared their vocational speeches.
 
Scott is currently the CEO of the Red Deer Chamber of Commerce and the reigning soap box champion of Canada. He regaled us with his tales of athletic prowness as a youth.  Scott had a varied academic history and eventually found his niche in the Sports Administration program at Red Deer College.  After a stint with Hockey Canada, Scott took on challenges as the CEO of the Canada Winter Games in  2009.  He loved being part of an organization that focused on community involvement.  He also started his own consulting and business development company, Red Soap Box Consulting.  2022 saw Scott return to his passion, connecting with the community, as the new Chamber of Commerce CE0.  He continues to be an active community member with his family. Rotary welcomes you Scott!
 
Laura took a backpacking holiday to Australia and brought home a large souvenir- her future husband.  Together they explored the world and ended up i Smithers.  Laura and her family of 3 children arrived in Red Deer in 1999.  She is currently a senior investment and wealth advisor with RBC.  Laura shared the unique challenges that women face as investors.  Welcome to Rotary Laura!

Coldest Night of the Year
Our team is up for the challenges on Feb 24 as they walk to raise funds to support the Mustard Seed and Red Deer Food Bank.  Please support them by donating to www.cnoy.org and follow the links to join the team or support a walker.  We have been issued a challenge by the other city clubs and are going to rise to the challenge!
