Rhona  DelFrari, Chief Sustainability Officer & Executive Vice-President, Stakeholder Engagement,Cenovus Energy spoke on Canada's role in the future of energy.

 

Rhona emphasized that the need for gas and oil will always exist, especially as more countries develop and create demands. She shared that as we will never be able to totally eliminate our need for oil and gas products the future needs to look beyond easy answers to solutions regarding climate change.  Petrochemical products are required for the building of roads, many of our household items, and for  more than half of the components of electric vehicles.  The energy sector has a strong record to collaborate and reduce energy emissions.

Canada can currently meet the global demands for oil and gas as it contains the 4th largest oil reserves on earth. Canada has only developed a small amount of the available reserves available.  Of those reserves, 20% can be mined and the remaining 80% can be accessed through drilling and steaming processes. Canada also is the home for one of the world's largest natural gas resources.  Oil and gas resources are being developed and follow strict environmental and governance regulations, resulting in low emissions. 

Rhona also provided information about the Pathways Alliance, which is composed of 6 of the largest oil  companies who are working with federal and Alberta governments with the goal to achieve zero net greenhouse emissions from oil sands by 2050.
