Darcy Morgan, vice chair of the  Legacy Place Society, was the featured speaker. This non profit charitable society provides support for 1st responders, veterans, military, corrections officers and their families. The goal is to ensure that there is ready access to resources that build resilience and help reduce the stigma of
mental health concerns as individuals or as a family.  Too often 1st responders are left to deal with struggles alone, fearing the stigma attached to admitting needing support.  They are endeavouring to change organizational norms regarding need for support for those in these occupations and for their families. Darcy shared how trauma often affects families and careers.  The trauma from events becomes cumulative with often dire consequences.
Legacy Place Society was founded in 1997 and provides a confidential crisis line, 3 safe houses across the province, and education and advocacy efforts .
His message was sobering and reminded all of the impact that trauma has on the lives of so many.

Meeting Update

Meeting was chaired by president, Brett Mauthe.  Erin Peden was the Sarge.

As we were marking Remembrance Day, Erin shared some sobering facts regarding  the impact of WW I and II in Red Deer.  850 left Red Deer to fight during WW1 with only 118 returning home.  During WWII 52 died and 26 were taken prisoner from the 1120 men and women who participated. Over 820 men were trained at the local Army camp, one of only 2 in Canada. Brett, having recently returned from a visit to the Canadian Heritage War Museum in Hamilton, reflected on the knowledge that he gained by visiting about the impact that war has had on Canadians. We thank those who worked toward obtaining peace and stronger communities over the years, often making a tremendous sacrifice.

Rotary Fireside Social
Rod Boshnick reminded all of the Fireside being held Wednesday from 6-8 at Red Deer Bottling.  All are welcome to come and explore more about what it means to be a Rotarian.

Rotarian of the Month- September.

We honor Harold Barnes. He has been a Rotarian for 13 years and is a  strong supporter of the Rotary Foundation ,local projects, and is currently a multi Paul Harris Fellow.  You will find him at many community events within our community.  He is a vocal advocate for Rotary and all that it stands for, particularly Rotary’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Harold  was a recipient of a Queen Elizabeth 11 Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 for community work. He is a long time member of People First Canada, a self advocacy group who want to ensure that all people with disabilities are included and respected in our communities.  Harold was part of the Canadian delegation to the UN to advocate for the rights of people labelled intellectually disabled. The story of his advocacy is shared in the book, The Audacity of Inclusion.  Harold lives the 4 way test everyday.  He is positive, he cares for others and shows genuine concern, he advocates for others to ensure that actions taken are fair to all concerned, he weighs his words and actions to ensure that they will build goodwill and better friendships, and he tries to ensure that what he does is beneficial to all concerned.   Harold is an excellent representative of all that Rotary stands for.
